Hi to all,
We are hoping to move to Vancouver Island in January 2010
and are wondering the best way of taking our belongings over there, for example our sofa, bed etc.
We presume taking it on a container would be the best option, maybe the only option, but wondered if anyone has any recommendations if you have used anyone and roughly how much it costs.
Thanks in advance and look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Becki, and welcome to the forum.
If you do a search of the forums, you'll find loads of thread with moving company recommendations on which should help.
What visa are you heading out there on?
Good luck with the move.

Hi,
Thanks for coming back to me, i will do the search in a mo, we are lucky enough not to have to go out on a Visa, my husband is a citizen and in turn my daughter now has citizenship, so my husband is sponsering me, we are just waiting on those papers before finalising when we can move over there.
Only got back from Canada last week and are itching to go.

Hi Becki, welcome to BE and glad you enjoyed Vancouver Island
Unfortunately we can't recommend the shipping company who moved us due to problems after the event but what we did learn from the whole exercise is it pays to shop around and have more than one company give you an estimate. Hope this helps

Hi there
I just posted some details of companies who gave me the best quotations. It really does pay to shop around and is well worth the time spending an afternoon or more "haggling" one against the other. I'd looked ad DIY shipping and once you realise that the companies such as Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC etc actually don't charge a great deal for shipping (but there are many other fees etc), it means you can be quite ruthless knowing the mark up agencies are making.
Good luck!

It depends on how much you want to take and how attached you are to your belongings. We are only intenting to takes some clothes (not many - suspect current items not suited to Canadian weather) and the dog. We may ship over a few of the CD's we can't replace but apart from that it's bootsale or skip for us.
