Moving back to UK - advice on selling car please!
Hi,
We're moving back to England in a few weeks and need to sell our car. We have a Chrysler PT Cruiser 2002 with low KMs. Can anyone recommend a car dealer who buys older cars without trade ins? We are in North Van. Many thanks Nicky |
Re: Moving back to UK - advice on selling car please!
Most dealers will buy for cash, don't expect a great deal though. You could also try posting it on this site in the classifieds section.

Thanks for any help you can provide :) Regards Dave We have been in Vancouver since April and have found it a financial struggle ever since we got here. My husband was laid off last week as he does not have a BC teaching certificate so he can't get a teaching job in BC and we have 2 small children and don't want to drag them around the country looking for work. You also cannot apply for teaching jobs until you have the certificate for that province so it's a catch 22. There are many hidden costs in Canada mainly the HST but BC is very expensive and they want to charge you for everything! We even had to pay 300 dollars tax for buying a second hand car! Anyway it all adds up and we are not financially better off here so we are heading back home. Where are you planning on going to? |

Where are you planning on going to? I don't see how BC is different from anywhere else re paying for stuff? In many instances it is a lot cheaper than other parts of the world, the UK included. It was a year between visits to the UK and I was horrified how expensive everything was. Feeling like you want to leave is normal for most, even up to the first three years. Getting a teaching job can take years, even for Canadians, it is a very protected career option and hard to break into for Canadian trained teachers. |
Re: Moving back to UK - advice on selling car please!
[QUOTE=The Aviator;8877262]HST is not hidden, unlike VAT in the UK, which is included in the price. HST in BC 12%, same as pre HST (GST & PST) on most things, VAT in the UK soon to be 20%.

Hi littlebob
I see..Sorry to hear your heading home already!! I've read about the taxes :) I'm considering heading to Moncton New Brunswick?? I'm planning a recce next April for 2 weeks. Both me and my partner fancy a better life/work balance.... I work as a fire safety officer for the Fire & rescue service and my partner works for the NHS as a care worker. Been thinking there must be more to life than paying the mortgage??? hence the exploring. I should be lucky enough to start off over there with around $200000 to buy a house and get settled etc. The only problem is selling my house in this current housing market and my job is not directly transferable so I could be looking at a career change. I hopefully wont have a mortgage so that should take the "life pressure"out having to work to make ends meet!! Cheers Dave |
Re: Moving back to UK - advice on selling car please!
We are successful with selling cars on Kijiji - shame your not closer we may have bough the cruiser if it's an auto.
There was one at the auction we went to yesterday that only sold for $2200, that was also a 2002 but had, had an obvious rear end repair. Just be prepared fro idiots and no shows - a lot of that goes on. |

Re: Moving back to UK - advice on selling car please!
try kijiji, we sold our truck within a couple of days for the price asked when heading back to uk. infact we got rid of most stuff on kijiji, in one case within 30 mins of placing ad!
oh and get it safetied prior to sale, seems to be helpful |

Hi, Thanks for all the advice. What does safetied mean? Thanks |
Re: Moving back to UK - advice on selling car please!
Safetied = passed the ministry safety test that used vehicles need before the next owner can register it.
Stick it on the Kijiji adds, you will get more than from a dealer. Cheap to advertise too. |

Must be a foreign thing, not in BC. So long as it has aircare you are OK.
Legally though I see its not a requirement:eek: |

Ah, right you are. Presumbly that sort of thing is still done sometimes in BC, if only to make a vehicle more appealing to a buyer?

Only a couple of people have asked if the vehicles we have sold have been safetied - that's negotiating room as not all insurance companies will require one if the car is relatively new. (Our insurance company have only ever asked on our old stuff). |

Sorry but that is crap. As long as the car is realistically priced and correctly described and hasn't got any scary stuff going on with it then it will sell.

However if you bought a basket case in the first place and paid top dollar for it and are trying to sell it for top dollar you ARE going to have a problem selling it and you ARE going to P1$$ potential buyers off if you describe your basket case as something it is clearly not - especially if they have driven 5 hours to look at your basket case. |

I would only buy from someone I know or a franchised dealer, regardless of how many owners. My daughter just bought a car from a reputable dealer, more than one owner, but don't how many. The dealer checked it out and told us it was OK and it is a great car. Why does it matter how many owners it has had? One owner can wreck a car or sell off a lemon. |

We have privately bought and sold dozens of cars both here and in the UK, we have also bought from auction and then sold on later with very little trouble, you do get the odd person concerned with how many owners and how long have you had it and why are you selling it, but as I have said, if it is priced well and clearly looked after your not going to have a problem selling it.

http://www.jtcbiz.com/images/FloodedCars.jpg I don't even know how you check how many owners a car has had here as there is nothing on the title to tell you. The best thing to do is check the car over thoroughly - lift carpets etc and if you don't know what your looking at get someone who does know have a look. Things that will put buyers off are things like a dirty car, a car that smells, flat tyres, non starting, a car full of rubbish, split seats (put a seat cover on) and then you've got the buyers that can actually tell if it's full of filler, so if you have a car that has been accident damaged and you know and the buyer asks about it then fess up and tell the potential buyer what has happened and what the repair was. |

Flood cars can be one or more owners, even new cars from a flooded dealership. The number of owners makes no difference to the risk. Or you could end up buying a stolen car, one with forged documents, one from a chop shop, or if paranoid, just buy a new car.

It's not about the number of owners but about dealers buying these junks and moving them around to other states and even to Canada/Mexico and then getting new titles and selling them.

Anyhow I couldn't care less how many people have owned my car(s) as long as my car is a good one and my OH won't let me drive anything remotely dodgy and if we ever buy anything from a dealer it would be a trade in that my OH has seen before the traders have come along and nabbed it. Again not caring if it has been owned by one or one hundred previous owners. Just because a car has had one owner doesn't necessarily mean it has been looked after, we have looked at big money one owner cars that have been just trashed. |

Your quote not mine! An unregistered car from a flooded dealership is no better than one that has had previous owners.
