Moving back to the UK
#31
lol yeah those are the good things... omg funny story... back in college a friend of mine (dope smokin hippie type) made a flyer.. "Come to beautiful boat harbour" and sent it god knows where. Now boat harbour is a depository for pulp effluent... seriously it will take the hair off your leg if you step in it, smells terrible... and looks nothing like the picture he put on his flyer. I often wondered if some poor tourist ever went to visit "Beautiful Boat Harbour" .

I would just like to give you the example of my sister who moved to Australia aged 18 to be with her Australian boyfriend. This was nearly 50 years ago.
She has been backwards and forwards between Oz and UK during those years. She will spend several years in one country then move to the other. Unfortunately she has never completely settled in either!
In my case at 9 I moved with my parents to France until I was 22! Desperately wanted to come back to the UK and 20 years later I can't wait to leave the place!
What I'm trying to say is that once you've lived abroad you can never totally settle wherever you are! So don't be surprised if you feel in a few years time that actually the grass in Canada might just be a little greener...

Hi
I dont think that applies if you have been living in the house as your main home. Just ask the tax office to be certain there is no liability.
Did you just not like Canada / or the Canadian lifestyle? Maybe you just picked the wrong Province? The UK appears to be in a fast decline with over immigration, poor Government, Lawlessness. The list goes on......coming back for a month each year maybe has not given you a true flavour about the Britain of today. If you have made up your mind, then I do wish you all the luck in the world........but I think it may be a prudent move to maybe rent your house out and come back for a year.....that way you will not have burnt your bridges with such a big move.
Good luck whatever you do decide to do.

Hi
I have been back to the UK every year for a month for the past ten years. I am not sure what you mean about tax implications ? Dont I just sell and move back home ?? Who would know I was moving back to the UK ?
I really dont understand that ? More advice would be useful on that one. Its not a 7 year "itch". I havent had a day of joy since I have been here

My kids would kill me if we moved back to the UK! They are so much happier here. The teen has way more freedom than he had in the UK & they all prefer school here.
Just today we went out to a leisure centre where they skated for an hour then went swimming for 3 hours! 3 kids 1 adult all for $20!
The older one has a pass for the ski park so he can go snowboarding with his mates whenever he wants & I certainly prefer my house & my job here to the UK.
I'm sorry it hasn't worked out for you & truly wish you the best but I'd rather have winter here than that miserable, dank, wet drizzle of a UK one any day!

Horses for courses but I moved back to the UK 5 months ago after 4 years in Canada and already it feels like the best decision I ever made.

ya know, I think if it werent for the winter I'd be much happier here. I have been here all my life, true what you say about the grass... its a dark green here.. not like the bright green grass in England.. bit of a different smell to it too. Its funny how little things like that add up when really they shouldn't mean much at all. I think my main issue is winter.

I think the Montreal winter was a large part of us coming back to the UK. Sure the first snowfall looks all nice. But the slush, slipping over and soaking carpets, take all the fun away. If it snowed Christmas Eve and stuck around till January 2nd that would be great but 2 year ago we had almost 12 feet of snow and it didn't melt until mid April!!

It's one of the reasons why we're in coastal BC. In April while the rest of the country is shoveling snow, we've been tending our gardens for months.

I have emailed the OP and just to say, that she's moving back to a gorgeous, pretty area, that's still relatively what England used to be all about. However, I did for five months as a single mum, loved most of it, but found that the UK certainly has it's problems and they are no different to what I left in 2007.
It's an individual decision, it's personal and it can't be judged. I know where I would be in a heartbeat if it was all about me, but it's not and at the moment Lethbridge AB is the right place for my family, but my heart will always be in Ipswich. I know people from old, I have connections and a network there, you can have a wicked night out, highbrow culture and fish and chips on the beach all in a weekend. But the schools leave a lot to be desired and the place is getting worse by the month with regards to social problems.
Good luck to anyone going through the push and pull of figuring out where the hell they should live, it's incredibly difficult and very stressful.
