Hi, I am planning on moving to Vancouver later this year hopefully to begin a Diploma in Accountancy programme. I am nearly 34 and will be moving completely by myself. I have a sister who lives in Massachusetts, but thats obviously miles away. So is it quite easy to meet people in Vancouver, and are there plenty of singles in their 30s over there to meet? I hopefully would like to get married and have a family sometime this lifetime.

I dont live in Vancouver, but I made the move to Canada alone, I found that if you just get yourself out to a few bars there are always people that want to talk to you.....including the ladies!! Its a bit lonely at first, but you start to make a few aquaintences after a while, whcih could lead to deeper freindships.

The workplace is always a good way to meet people too, and failing that I found when I worked in a bar (not my usual job - I now have a job in my usual field) but this is really good for meeting and getting to know people in a new area very quickly, I would consider this if I ever moved areas again, I would consider doing it alongside my day job, as it really does accelerate the process of getting to know people.

I wasnt (quite) on my thirties, or on the West coast, but arrived on my own and managed to become attached to a wife, kids, associated cars, mortgage and 3 family pets. Canadians are very friendly (most of the time) so you do not have any problem meeting new people

The OP is attending an Accountancy related course so he may struggle, even there.

I moved alone to Toronto (June 2008) and it is just as hard (or easy) to find a partner in Canada as in any other place of the world.

But since Canada is a place where lots of people are moving to at different ages you will meet many people who are in your shoes!

try www.meetup.com and start connecting with new friends in your area. You'll be surprised! I met lots of people through those "organized" social events and it's always fun. Once you are settled you can of course try eharmony.ca and other online dating sites. But give meetup a try - it's the cheaper and nicer way to connect!!

I am in a same position. It is daunting to move alone, however when I was on my recce trip to Vancouver in December, I found everyone to be really friendly so I think you will have no problem. I hope to get out there in the autumn.

Don't forget your accent will be a chick magnet.

My son has kept his accent and is a chick magnet - my daughter has lost hers but is pretty anyway.

Vancouver is a very lively and exciting place, especially when you get to the downtown area, I've been there on two different occasions and had no difficulties attracting company of different kinds. You'll be fine.

Yeah it is in some ways, I also find that some are a bit wary of you too tho, as they have trouble understanding everything you say, unless thats just me!! Apprently we talk to fast! and some shortened/slang words are not understood.

It mostly works for you tho I find! LOL
