This is slightly premature of me but in the hope we might make it out to Calgary by the start of the next academic year, my 12 year old son is desperate to know if there are any football (that's soccer in Canadian) teams he can apply to join in Calgary... where they're based and how they train, etc. He represents his school at present and I think he's hoping to be another Owen Hargreaves.

TONS, just Tons, too much for some Parents who spend entire summers taxiing kids to tournaments.

They might not have a school soccer team, but in the local communities the answer is like the reply above........tons. And you just join a local team, they take everyone.

The schools do not organise sports activities. That is done by parent volunteers through community associations and the like, as Helen mentioned.

Hi soccer in Calgary is a high standard 1 of top 4 provinces in every age group.

Apparently, been there twice for tournaments, they have a weekend where they assest the kids playing level for their age and then build teams with like skilled players.

Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton Regina, Sasketoon, are just the Canadian places we been to tournaments.

In some parts of there are afflication with Super Y leagues and you become a travel team just for league games.

Heh heh, HWP. Thanks for catching that. I did a Google search for SOCCER + CALGARY, and that was one of the first links that came up -- honest. But you're probably right about the been in Canada too long part, because I didn't even notice that a link that came up in response to a search for soccer was actually about hockey.

Hey I have a budding Owen Hargreaves too !!

We arent in Calgary but a bit south and Nathan has registed to play for the Lethbridge Cosmos, trained and played for 2 weeks with their teir 3 boys in May and now the manager of the Tier 2's is eager to see how he copes with his guys too - in big demand he is !!!

One thing that I have noticed over in Canada is that Junior Soccer is much better organised than in the UK and also if your UK team depended on a couple of people doing the fund raising and the ferrying of kids you will be shocked at the commitment that teams expect in Canada - but EVERYONE does their little bit which is good.

Alberta, Ontario, quebec and BC are very organised because they have the numbers kids and coaches.
Most people ferry their kids because they are family oreintated or don't trust anyone else.

But having said that in the Rec levels here Soccer for most is a babysitting service. Don't care if the kid competes tries or even attends games just so they have somewhere to go with their friends.

Top level teams aren't always available but as always if your good enough someone will want you.
