Default Moved: Question re Driving License

We are landing in Ontario late October and obviously we will have to exchange our driving licenses over there. I have 3 points from 2001 which still show on my paper license, although for insurance and penalty purposes they are now clear. Will this have detrimental effects on my Ontario license when i get it? Should i send off to DVLA to have license reprinted with points now clear?

Any pointers i would be very grateful.

Thanks

Chris

Chris

For the sake of about £20 I would apply for a replacement license, then there will be no questions about earlier time expired point penalties.

Good luck

or to do it for free change the address on your licence to a relatives address. seeing as you wont be at your old address anyway.
then when your new licence comes it will be clean and wont cost you £20!!

I didn't have points but Ontario were not the slightest bit interested in my paper counterpart, or Mr B's. In fact his had been through the washing machine at some point, was illegible, crumbling away... good job they didn't look it at. They only kept our photocards, the paper bits were shoved back across the desk at us.

I would just offer the photocard and only give the counterpart if asked. I don't know if there'd be an electronic exchange of info from the DVLA to Ontario too, and if so whether the points would vanish that way...

The Ontario people are only interested in the paper counterpart because the UK DVLA insist on receiving a photocopy of it in the post as part of the reciprocal agreement for license exchange. They really couldn't give two hoots for what's on it, but they will (or should) insist on seeing it.

I'd packed my paper counterpart in the container, along with other documents: it never occurred to me that somebody might actually need a copy of it. Thankfully I was able to get at the relevant box while it was in storage and retrieve the paper (hurrah for a detailed inventory!!). The Ontario licensing people were pretty rude about the UK system and the fact that they had to deal with a crappy piece of paper - comments to the effect that "what's the point in having a machine readable photocard if you still need a piece of paper to record information?"

I should have given a date for my exchange, it was Feb 05 I think, at Etobicoke. Your experience is probably more recent and relevant - perhaps the DVLA asked them to look at them since my swap? Ours were really shoved straight back at us, it could have said "always drives drunk and straight over puppies" and they'd never have known

Manitoba also has a 2-part card and paper system, but I haven't a clue what they did this time I exchanged in Ontario, child was trying to beat other customer's child in waiting room so I didn't see if it was looked at. I certainly handed it over and still have it though, so it wasn't kept. The photocard part obviously was.

Someone else said that they had points on their UK license which vanished when they did the transfer. So you should be OK...

That was my experience late 2004. At the time the lady I dealt with looked totally perplexed when I handed her the paper part of the UK license. I think she gave it back too although I think I'm right in saying that the arrangement between Ontario and the UK back then was pretty new. So maybe they know what they're doing now.
