Moved: Ontario or Manitoba

Re: Moved: Ontario or Manitoba
You seem very angry, the easiest thing to do on this forum is quote the stereotypical bad things about Manitoba, but it is amazing how much of a positive slant you can put on them when you can afford an amazing house when comparing to your 'HAVE' provinces.
Maybe you could give the OP some constructive advice (not generalisations)about the different parts of Ontario, and the best places to live, I'm interested on your views on Thunder Bay, Sioux St Marie and Dryden, or do you like many Canadians think the GTA is the centre of the world (for fear of generalising).

MM, I suspect you have a vested interest in selling RE in Manitoba, there is a reason it is called Winterpeg, -40 is KOLD , dry, moist or in between, it is still damn cold.
Almost 75% of the entire population live in Winnipeg, Brandon is the only other city of any kind of size, the Peg is pretty small.
I know the province, Beausejour, Thompson, Flin Flon, Pinawa etc, the whole population of the
Province is the size of a Toronto suburb.
Prices are cheap, will stay cheap, not a lot moving there unless the government relocates them.
A Socialist Government, the Workers Party, pretty well sums it up, only Mb and SK, two HAVE NOT Provinces, elect Socialists.
If things are so good, why do you have to rely upon the rest of us to pay your Bills????

Re: Moved: Ontario or Manitoba
Thank you. Something for the GTA people to think about on their commutes to work while stuck in traffic!
So far I have found nothing to complain about in Manitoba. Yes there are mosquitos, but then Toronto seems to have a huge smog problem. And you get bug spray! I have seen one caterpillar and that was not in my yard but at the zoo. Everyday the sun seems to shine (yes we have had a few rainy days with thunderstorms but mostly overnight).
My commute to downtown from just inside the perimeter (South) takes about 20-25 minutes with little traffic. We can afford a generous size house for a family of 5. Something we could never dream of doing in the UK (or in Toronto/Calgary or Vancouver). We are relatively close (just over an hours drive) to beautiful beaches on the lake shores.
Nothing ever seems to get too crowded. My husband and I both have promising careers with international companies. My son is going to private school from September for $600 a year.
My husband has a 4km trip to work. I have not yet experienced a winter here but as the Norwegians say "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes".
I would never leave Manitoba.....(although have heard great things about Saskatchewan! And the people in Manitoba are so friendly, and can't do enough to make you feel welcome. We bought a van privately and were invited to dinner by the people who sold it. They cooked picarel and bison so we could have the full Canadian experience!

Susan, Private School for $600, don't you mean $6,000?
Talk to me after a Winter there, and you forgot to mention the Floods, but you missed the last one.

scimdarren, your quote that many Canadians think the GTA is the centre of the world says it all, MANY CANADIANS.
Dryden, Kenora, the Soo, etc, all Rural areas, horrible Weather, limited prospects, those with any get up and go, got up and went.
Life is more than cheap housing and short commutes, BUT I am a city person, I prefer Chicago to Boulder, New York to Omaha, I would much rather be on the freeway in the middle of life than sitting on the side watching it go by.
The beauty of Canada is you have those choices, the other beauty is your accent doesn't out you into a specific social Class, By Gum.

chill out Man.
Not everyones life is just about the money and what material things they can get. The fact people live in various conditions that are different from yours all over this world doesn't mean they are all trapped there.
I have been in W'innipeg, MB for 9 years, yes I did miss the flood of 97 but followed it on the web and came for a visit in Sept 97. Just like the UK now, if your house isn't in the flood plain you'll not have much to worry about. MB isn't flat it's sloped 700+ feet above sea level in the South sea level in Churchill To rise by a foot in the general living areas of Winnipeg they would have to be a 1 in 600 year flood. So don't worry about floods build a dike.
Mossies bites? reacted well the first year not any more, West Nile? Coming to a place near you soon.
Winter is great No Rain for months on end, snow on about 10 days and free skating for months. Indoor soccer for the kids, doing speed skating this year, so might have to invest in a warmer coat to be out for more than 1/2 an hour.
Winnipeg is a good family town, so is Brandon 2hrs away. If it's a career pumping millions into your bank and it has nothing to do with farming that someone is looking for then Winnipeg is possible not the place for them. Except we do have the TV, finance and Grain companies head offices here.
Loads of Mining, oil, universities, transport and commericals compaines might suit some.
You can enjoy your life and others will enjoy theirs please accept that lucky for you not everyone wants your lifestyle.
Note :-
as you now on my ignore list I will not be seeing you comments so rant away. Enjoy your life and Good luck.

Re: Moved: Ontario or Manitoba
I've had more bites in a fortnight here than in MB all last summer
It's a shame people believe the horror stories about weather and mosquitoes, I think many British expats would find exactly what they're looking for in MB if they didn't take these kind of posts as gospel.
