I am back from my recce mission, and think that realistically I'm likely to be able to earn between $80 - 100k, and I'm wondering how liveable this would be in Vancouver. Since I have pretty much no idea what the cost of living would be, could anyone please share their monthly expenditure on utilities, groceries, etc. etc. for a family of four? I obviously realise that real estate in Vancouver is very expensive, but am hoping that the equity in our house in the UK will buy us something outright.

Hi - I can't help with monthly budgets, but I wanted to ask (if I may) what job you've got for that salary, and if it would equal in money terms the salary you've been earning in the UK.?
I'm interested as I'm hoping to move to either Calgary and Vancouver and want to know what the salary / cost of living there.
Bandit.

There was a thread a few months ago about the cost of living in vancouver and realistic monthly budgets..the info in it is probably still relevant.
Cost of living threads are two a penny it seems:

The job is as a sales manager, managing a team of sales reps. Actually, I currently do something a bit different in the UK, but I think the UK equivalent would be about £50k+. So it's a little less than the UK equiv.

What is the commission structure though (assume there is one if its a sales management position)? Is a lot of that $80-100k assumed commission? Depending on the organisation, how long sales cycles are, when commission payments are made, etc you could end up earning just the base to begin with and it will take 6-12 months for any kind of decent commission to kick in. Just something to think about.

That sounds about right. If it was me I would do my calcs based on not getting the bonus until I had been working for the company a bit and was really able to guage how realistic the bonus was. Its really hard to tell up front.
