how much are basic groceries compared to uk. also the cost of electricals and furniture and household services(electric,gas etc) oh and not forgetting a pint of beer and a glass of wine

Its been done. The search function is your friend. For example I know Steve used to post a monthly update on Alberta grocery costs. Beer/ wine / spirit prices you can get from the LCBO website.

The short answer for most groceries is what does it cost in the UK...convert that to dollars. Exceptions are beef is cheaper in canada, milk/dairy, chicken and cheap bread are more expensive. Not much in the way of cheapo wine to be had, $10 a bottle min for anything you want to drink. Domestic Beer is a buck /buckfifty a bottle more or less if you buy 24s, and more like $3.50 to $5 in a bar
