I remember reading a couple of years ago a book about moving to Canada, it mentioned some requirements for shipping of beds. I had a motorbike accident a number of years ago and as a result i have therapeutic bed for a bad back. Since we have a bed i have no problems with and it cost more than a standard bed, rather than go through all the agro of finding a simular bed than would suit over there i was hoping to ship this in our container.
Can i ask for those that may have shipped beds in their removals are there any requirements? i seem to remember something about specialist cleaning and then wrapping. I appreicate any assistance here.

Normally they don't allow used mattresses, but they make an exception for settlers mattresses under tariff 9807.00.00 so you can bring yours. We did, no problem at all.

The above link goes into detail about the need for cleaning and fumigating mattresses. However, we didn't do this... the suggestion never even came up.
Did anyone else?? ....or were anybody's unfumigated mattresses turned away ???

No, it says stuff being imported under tariffs xyz (including the one that new PRs/returning citizens/bequests etc use) is exempt from all that

Ok, so do these tariffs apply for temporary workers, ie can we bring non fumigated matresses in?
I really don't fancy sleeping on freshly pesticided/herbicided stuff, especially my wee ones!

the stuff you learn on this forum!!
i'd never have thought about this as an issue! we'd planned on taking our beds with us so we've at least got something as soon as we land (and the spare bed is less than 2 years old anyway) and don't have to worry about spending unnecessary money!

Has no-one considered that it'll cost hundreds of pounds to ship the beds over in the first place? All that money saved goes towards new ones so they won't end up costing that much. Also the container could be weeks after you arrive so what are you going to sleep on for that time? Surely not stay in a hotel for that length of time? All money down the drain.

As we will have more bedrooms in Canada, we will buy one new and sleep on that etc.

Our container (20ft) was filled to the brim and cost around 4400 pounds to ship. There is no way on earth that we could have furnished our whole house for $11k (exchange rate was 2.6 back then)

We shipped everything we owned including our mattresses (not fumigated) and we were on a work permit. We couldn't believe the prices of new beds when we got here so are very glad that we brought ours.

Same here - okay the bedding is an inch or two out, but so what, we tuck it in. It's no reason to throw out a perfectly good bed. For duvets, I don't know what Canadian sizes are but we keep our UK goose one in winter, and get rellies to ship us a new UK cover set every now and then, and have a Canadian comforter thingy in summer.
It's not a big deal to live with a UK sized bed here, and unless you've got a rubbish bed and/or pots of money, I'd say bring it every time

I Know - thats what I'm thinking. I mean we have a pocket sprung mattress- so thats quite a lot, and then another double bed (fixed legs on mattresses) and a stacker bed. Comparable quality- thats probably nearly £1.5K on the mattresses/beds alone.
