Quite frankly, I've never been able to fathom the desire of many Brits to come over here ... the grass is always greener I suppose. Between the weather here, the workaholic society, the horrid suburban car-centred cities, I'd think twice. Not that I'm saying things are any better there ... just that it is no Utopia.[/QUOTE]
Hi,
I`m in engineering(toolroom machinist) and heading out to BC.On most accounts the first reaction from fellow workers is `you must be mad' on the basis of having only 10 days vacation.I do feel that this is a major drawback for Canada in recruiting skilled personnel.I know a few in my trade who have gone to Australia with similar employment conditions as the UK if not better.

Try get a job in a major Canadian company - I get 7 weeks in BC Hydro but must have 2 weeks paid. Some jobs do get good vacation time.

You are not alone. My secretary/office admin (who's 51 but looks like 35, from St. Kitts, are they all like that?) told me today that her new collective agreement gives her 6 weeks a year. Good for her. I'm fine with that as long as she continues to take time off when I'm on holiday, because I can't manage without her.
Of course, she's a union member. I think not being one is the mistake most folk here make.
