Default Mosquitos (Nova Scotia)

Hi our daughter has volunteered to work at the Scout Camp on Miller Lake, Fall River for the summer great news but... whilst she was there last year she was eaten alive, is there anything we can do to prevent it happening again...

Thanks
Rosie

Buy a repellent with a high concentration of DEET.

Wink Re: Mosquitos (Nova Scotia)

I lived in Canada for ten years before returning back to the UK.

If i was ever bitten by mosquitos I would have a terrible reaction, swelling, itching (normal tho), all around bites would be every colour under the rainbow. In the end at the start of summer my doctor gave me an anti histamine shot (is that how you spell it) Although I was still being bitten, the reaction wasn't quite as bad.

Maybe worth your daughter going to the doctor and finding out if there is anything they can give her.

Good luck

Raine

Hi Rosie,

Gemma must be getting excited, not long now! We are getting prepared for mosquitos, looking into best stuff to buy. Have been told by few people that Avon's bath oil spray is great, so will give that a go, let you know if it works.
How's things going? Rod heard any news yet?

Thanks Raine,

we've got an appointment at the Doctors this week, I think over the years we've tried most things but she's not going to enjoy 10 weeks on an island covered in mosquito bites lol

My six year old has to have an antihistamine shot. If bitten by mozzies, he swells up at the bite site as though he has been beaten, it looks awful. He also has severe asthma and the doctor told me that asthma inhalers make the reaction worse (steroids in the flovent I think, not sure what is in the generic Ventolin [salbutamol] they use here). Problem is, getting bitten and swelling up often triggers the asthma, so he has to have a shot to minimize the effects of both.

Its not.

BACK WOODS OFF

Mosquitos have been discussed ad nauseum before, and the only thing thats proven to work is DEET. Of course what else it does is anyones guess. If it works by messing with the nervous system of a mosquito, I wonder what it does to a 3 year old.

Yesterday I tried spraying myself with Absorbine UltraShield Fly Spray :

It seemed to work well and no bits have fallen off overnight.

Not a lot yet, but they're here. Had my Skeetervac going for three weeks now!

Hopefully if I can wipe out a large number now there wil be fewer to breed later on.

Well I must confess....our Blackflies are out...but none are biting yet so I guess it is the female or male that comes first. I would much rather have mossies than black flies! :scared:

Not in Ontario, but I have a friend who has been out camping already, SW of Calgary in the Bragg Creek area.

He said yesterday that the mosquitos were out and as big as the ones he remembers from Manitoba. Said something about they were big enough to fillet.

We've not seen any in Calgary yet though.

Cheers
Steve
