I never got bothered by mozzies back home but since I've been here they seem to love the taste of me. I get red marks but they don't itch or get infected the red marks just look so ugly

Mine were awful, clarityn did nothing, benadryl helped but it made me so tired. The pharmacist recommended calamine lotion which helped but I found it was matter of just time and eventually they stopped itching. One spray which numbed the bites was lanacane.

Last year I really suffered because of these little b*ggers! Swolled up like a blinkin rugby ball. This year? Not so bad, although this has been a bad year in Southern BC 'cus of the rain
It's the loudy buzzy ones which still cause me problems when they sting. We now have an electric Mozzy killer in the garden and it's really good, works to a distance of 4.5 metres. If I do get stung I've found the best thing is to wash the bite with soap and water and apply cool itch or anthisan. After Bite just burns blinkin great holes in my skin!! Looked like a colendar (that's not right is it?) but you know what I mean.

Not sure if you can get Tiger Balm in Canada but I've found it works great on mozzie bites. I'm lucky to be able to pick it up in our local pound shop - so its cheap and cheerful too!

I have in the past used Benadryl, rubbing alcohol and Afterbite but this year I am trying another remedy.
Someone told my mom that taking a daily dosage of Vitamin B1 does something to your blood which makes you less appealling to the mozzies.
She went to a chemist in the UK and spoke to the Pharmacist who said that she had heard the same although there had been no medical trial or evidence to suggest that B1 worked.
She usually gets really badly bitten by the blighters but started to take the B1 before she came out and although we have been spending alot of time outside she hasnt been bitten once since she arrived just over a week ago. So I thought I would give them a try too.
On the days where I have taken B1 I have not been bitten - even though Phil and the kids have been bitten - and when I havent taken one I have been bitten a few times so I would say that they seem to work for me.
I have also used mouthwash on my inflamed bites and this calms the bites down almost instantly and they itchy stinging feeling doesnt return.

Why is "natural" so important? Botulism is natural, Salmonella, Ecoli, Poison Ivy...all natural.
If you used an artificial repellent like DEET in the first place, you wouldn't have to worry about bite relief after the fact...

Yep, i used Deet, but i went backout a few hours later & i should have put some more on maybe

I can't recall where i heard this but i have been told using Deet often isn't good for your skin?

I am just looking for a couple of alternatives. I am not in the best of health & due to go into the QE11 in August. Since getting ill my skin has become more sensitive than before

Thank you for all your comments, i may well find the alternative i am looking for

I always use Witch Doctor gel for bites and nettle rash here in England and it's amazing. Takes the sting and itching away almost instantly.
Please tell me you can get it in Canada! If not I'll have to bring some with me and have it sent over regularly
Are the bugs really that bad over there?

Not seen it. Probably got witchhazel in it right? Im pretty sure you can get that...its a large part of the make up of "Optrex".
My personal theory is that although the bugs are undoubtedly worse here (more of them), a lot of the ugly aftermath is simply the result of us newcommers not having built up some resistance as kids when these things are first inflicted on us. That would also explain why they dont seem to bother you after a few years too.
I wonder if Canadians in the UK complain that the wussy midgy bites swell up all huge and angry on them?

Hi,
Doesn't help if you're already bitten, but if you can get it try Marmite.
And before everyone starts NOT on the BITES on toast
, seems the little blighters hate it and won't bother you if you've been scoffing it.
Don't know about Canadian mozzies but it really works on European & African ones. Mind you it works on the OH as well coz he HATES it.
Just a thought.
