Obviously your biggest hurdle will be the French language if you don't speak it. It's great that your all for them learning it as your wee ones will have to go to French school being the children of immigrants. You and your OH will also have to speak good French if you are to have any chance of Quebec giving you a selection certificate, or to get a decent professional job.
Montreal is amazing though, great choice. I am headed out there about October this year.

We are in Montreal and have been for nearly 4 years now. We have a 5 and 8 yr old and they have both been fine with the language but it is so much easier when they are younger. As virion said they will have to go to french school but there are immersion classes or you can go down the english private route where they will still have french but lessons will be more predominantly english.
Feel free to pm me...

"my wife and kids have canadian citizenship and I have PR" - where do you have PR? New Zealand or Canada? Are you a Canadian citizen too?

You went on to ask "do we still need good french for 'selection' certificate" so I would think the question is very relevant.
But if you decide not to provide consistent or comprehensive information - fine, just don't expect meaningful advice in return.

If your wife is a citizen and you have PR then you are fine for the permission to live there and don't need any selection certificate. You'll very likely need French for your working life. You might get by without, maybe, depends what you do for a living.
