If you have the component TV cable it should be fine regardless.
it wont play locally bought "NTSC" games though (probably)

Totaly depends on what you've modified ?

Why? What could they have modified that would change the component output video signal?
All they need is a component video cable, and they may well already have that for the better image quality anyway.
Probably just been modded to take illegally downloaded and burned game disks anyway...

When anyone says they modded a console they just mean it is hardware chipped or in the case of the Wii it can be software "chipped" to play copied games. Sorry "backup" games.
unless yes they are mad and have lowered it, spoiler etc lol

the chip on its own, pushed into a bit of antistatic foam posted on is different, very few would bother to check what it actualy is or would even know how to tell, but a case that has had its tamper evidence seals broken and is known to be abel to be "chipped" to run illegal content warrents further inspection and warrents further inspection of anything traveling with it
I agree it'd work on component of HDMI regardless

Hi all and thank you. when we tried it in Canada a couple of months back the tv screen was flickering with banded lines and we could not choose anything from the menus without great difficulty, then when we could choose to play a game it was in black and white. Any ideas greatly appreciated thank you.

What you describe is pretty much what happens when you feed a normal UK PAL signal to a TV thats expecting an North American NTSC signal. ie using just the cable supplied with the Wii.
This wont happen with a component signal.

Hello there, yes we did as the link says? The problem is the flickering and not being able to choose from the menus to set things up. Maybe we should set it up ready for our return next week .....thanks for helping us, will try and give this a go and let u know
