To moderators: Is it OK for non-Brits to post here?
Hi, I posted a message here yesterday, but I guess I should have asked before I did it. As I said in that post, I'm not British, but I've been following this forum on and off since August 2005. So, the question is: is it OK for me to post here? I looked into the forum rules and could not find anything regarding that.
Thank you. LHK |
Re: To moderators: Is it OK for non-Brits to post here?

Re: To moderators: Is it OK for non-Brits to post here?
Thanks very much! ;)
I started thinking about going to Canada when I was seventeen, when I was still in high-school (Now I'm about to turn 40!! ). Then I dropped the subject to the back of my mind (at the time I was too young and had not near the number of points necessary for that, not to mention a total lack of life and professional experience). Actually, I completely forgot about that. Then, when I started dating the missus  , about twelve years ago, we briefly flirted with the idea of going to Yukon! Then, we forgot the issue again. In 2004, we went to Toronto and the wife fell in love with the region (we were tourists and were at the Sheraton, living the good life! ), especially NOTL (which I know is totally prohibitive unless you're filthy rich). Last year, when we learned the family was increasing, we started toying with the idea again. Last week, we decided to begin our planning, which I detailed in my previous post. I'd appreciate if you could share your thoughts and experience with me regarding my questions of yesterday. ;) Again, thanks very much for the warm welcome! Best, LHK |

Unlike you have no partner, spouse or child on the way. Totally independent, I am. Good luck to you. T'ronno is the best city in the world. |

We too looked at moving to Canada 20 years ago and then along came a new job and the first child and life passes you by as they say. Good luck in your quest. |

We're kind of in the same boat, mate. I am non Brit, live there though. I didn't just think about living in Canada when I was 18. I actually did it and have wanted to go back ever since. I am past 40 (will be 42 later this year).

I asked that because here's Big Brother land, too, though it's called BBB (Big Brother Brasil). :frown: We also have some mileage ourselves travelwise... But then, we're no longer as free as we once were. But you're right, better try to do it now than in 20 year's time. |

I assume your first language isn't English. You write well but it's difficult to reconcile the idea of having English as a mother tongue and being able to sit through Rush.
Why? Is it too noisy? Or you can't stand the lyrics? Anyway, my musical taste is very wide... What do you like? |

Alex Lifeson lives in Florida, Neil Peart is splitting his time between LA and Toronto (as far as I know) and Geddy Lee is still in Toronto. They are also still very active. Never seen them live but I love their music. I'm currently listening to Saga, another Toronto band. Latest CD is Trust. Love it. My all time favorite band. I collect all their studio albums. Have everything they did that's been released on vinyl and then again on CD. |

Am I the only one who sees the irony of associating Rush with Saga:rofl:

You forgot Brian Adams Edited to add: When he went all ballad and that I kind of started losing interest. Waking Up The Neighbours is really really good, though. what, no C-S-N-Y (especially the Y) or Tragically Hip? |

Where are you on ELP, Jethro Tull and Uriah Heep? |
Re: To moderators: Is it OK for non-Brits to post here?
Neil Young is so eclectic its hard not to find something to like. Weld is one of my favourate live albums of all time.
Anyway, hes yet another canadian who hit the big time and left for the US on the first available flight. Still a God in canada though. Tragically Hip are for some reason considered the biggest/best live band in Canada... by plaidwearingbornincanadacanadians anyway. Brian Adams notwithstanding. Least said, soonest mended. |

As for the lyrical quote - there is a difference between UK and Canadian irony ;-) |

I loath the lyrics because, in the rare instances that they make any sense at all, they espouse the philosophy of the neo-facist Ayn Rand. They seem to me to be abhorent people with a gross inflated opinion of themselves, besides which their brand of pomp rock is tedious in the extreme.
Where are you on ELP, Jethro Tull and Uriah Heep? Well, none of my friends back then were into ELP, so, I sort of skipped that class. Used to listen a bit of Jethro Tull and just a wee of UH. What about Zappa, Beatles, Metallica, Iron Maiden and Ozzy (pre-The Osbournes)? |

That is, quite genuinely, the first time I've heard the idea that Canadians have irony.
Are you saying that the lyric doesn't mean what it says? Are Nickleback actually gay? I find that very hard to believe; I think they're simple minded literalists and anyway, just look at them! And for lyrics, just check out some of David Coverdale's stuff, or Beatles (argh! I'm bashing the crown jewel of British musical heritage!). Even ABBA's swedish lyrics were quite simple. Americans do the same. Britney Spear "baby hit me one more time" comes to mind. Oh wait! That hit song was written by a swede. |
