Mobile boadband
 

ill be bringing my laptop PC in Canada when i start work this summer. but i'm looking for a mobile broadband product similar to what 3, Virgin, O2, Voda or T-mobile is offering in the UK. any sugestions?

I think Rodgers offer something like that, it costs between $30 and $85++ per month dependent on usage, and from what I've read its not as fast as says it is.

I thinks its your only choice.

A mate of mine came up here with a Sprint broadband gadget and I was stunned at how effective it was. We tried it in the barn, in a moving car, in spots where neither the cell phone (Bell) nor radio (SiriusXM) work and, even in those places, it provided better throughput than one gets from cable (Rogers). However, it's $200 a month + so much a minute for usage + roaming fees if you're not at home. All in all you need to be able to write it off somehow.

I'm hoping they eventually get around to deploying WiMax in Detroit - just need to work out how to get around the US address then...

I'm incorporated in the US and have a contract with a firm that just maintains addresses for corporations. It's not expensive but it is cumbersome to use as it means correspondence goes to Nevada before coming to Canada.

If he was using it in Canada, it was probably roaming on a Canadian network. In which case, you should be able to buy the same service here.

A couple years back, Canadian data prices were insane to the extent it could actually be cheaper to buy an American service and roam here. Things are a little better now.

Rogers don't charge any roaming or long distance for data within Canada, and I believe the same is true of Bell and Telus. Just be careful (or figure out how to turn roaming off) if you get close to the border.

Indeed - my phone sometimes flicks over to a US network, even though I've not left the country. I'm 5 miles from the border.

Rogers owns Fido.

Do Bell work on the GSM network? Here in MB, MTS (formerly Bell) dont use GSM.

Far as I know in Ontario Bell/Telus still use the antiquated CDMA networks. I think therefore your top speed with either be EVDO or EDGE, which is slower then HSDPA/HSUPA.

is there a Verizon Canada? i looked at Rogers site and they have this 3G wireless broadband they are offering for like $CAD20 for a 1GB monthly allowance. is that good?

* i will only use my mobile broadband for say 2-3 months until a get a permanent place to stay and settle down. does these companies allow you to "upgrade" like change/convert a mobile wireless broadband to a cable/landline broadband, take a bundle, etc.
