Re: Mississauga or Toronto
Atlantic Expat and Christmasoompa,
We lived in Winnipeg for a year and a half, we don't want to go back there because of the weather. We thought of Alberta, cost of living is high there too, as well in Vancouver. And travelling from Vancouver to India is a very long journey I guess. As we are originally from India we ended up with Mississauga and Toronto because it has good Indian population, the travel from India is also easy (considering our parents), just one direct flight. Also we are currently living in a suburb without much friends and networking, so thought of moving to a city for a change.
So if you could suggest a decent neighborhood considering all of the above would be very helpful. Any input is fine because we don't know anybody there.
Thanks.

CaptainHook,
I got a chance to contact a fellow Indian, who is currently residing in Mississuaga and was of the impression that even though Brampton has a lot of Indians, it's not decent. She told me that she would recommend Mississauga.

Oops! Guess it's cheap for a reason then!

Re: Mississauga or Toronto
My (token) Indian friend rented a three bedroom apartment at Yonge and Shepherd when they had a rough year financially. That's a dull but safe neighbourhood. They moved to a succession of rented houses around there and seem happy enough with their latest. The people around there are mostly Persian but it's Toronto so there's a mixture of ethnicities. Suburban feel but easy access to downtown by subway.

Re: Mississauga or Toronto
At the risk of being accused of local cheerleading, north central Richmond Hill (e.g. above Elgin Mills and Yonge) has a substantial Indian population, a couple of relevant grocery shops and at least three good restaurants. Rents should be available in your price range (I think).

Agreed. I'm not that far from the first one, and it's the only part of Scarborough I try to avoid if possible.
Good luck with your search.
