Default Missing Marmite

Hi Everyone,

My family and I are just four weeks away from moving to Vancouver, Burnaby area. One of my things to deal with is how will I get Marmite, my children live on th stuff. the other problem is I drink Lift Lemon Tea, because I can't drink milk as in ordinary tea. Does anyone know a supplier in Vancouver or will I have to beg a relative to send me some.

Thanks

I am sure you will find Marmite in BC...most likely in the superstore, it is in the section where the yeast is! Not sure what Lift Lemon Tea is but sounds like a herbal one. I am sure you will find Tetley has lemon tea.

Marmite is easy to get. Loblaws / PC brand stores (including "superstore") carry it. About $3+ for a small jar. Still tastes awful here

Lift Lemon Tea I havent seen, thats the instant powder stuff isnt it? I guess it is a little like the ice tea powder that gets me through the summer, but served hot? There are all sorts of milk free herbal teas around, or you could just put lemon in regular brewed tea instead of milk?

Failing that there are specialty stores that will hunt down stuff and import it.

Good Luck

Iain

News on the street is that Marmite repells mozzies, and no, you don't have to smear it on your skin, it's something to do with sweat. I know it sounds disgusting but if we ever get our PR I shall be eating, drinking and probably smearing the foul black goo.

I could not imagine rolling in MARMITE....just to keep the bugs away....or eating it for that matter! The stuff smells...So I guess it would keep the old buggies away!
Actually the mossies aren't that bad...the black flies are worse but fortunately they don't last for long....about 4-6 weeks and they are gone. As soon as we start to see a few mosquitos then we know the black flies are on the way out. Now a black fly is so small but has one heck of a big bite on it...leaves a hole in your skin. I think it is only the female that bites...(what can I say!!) So when the black fly first come out it is usually the male you see for a week or so and then the females make a presence.

On the mosquito subject, if my biology serves me right, its the Anopheles ( Malaria causing ) one that is the real pest. When those things bite you, you are left with a bump for days.

What i found during my travels on the African Continent , is that the locals put dried orange skin in a bucket of burning coal, and the mosies do not like this at all, and it seems to work.

Marmite is widely distributed here by Best Foods. However, the jars are quite small, so you may want to pack a couple of the jumbo ones with you.

Here in Toronto you can find the larger jars at many West Indian shops, but there are less of those in Vancouver. Some Indian shops might sell the large jars. But rest assured the small jars are sold at most supermarkets.

You can buy Marmite in Safeway - same price as in UK. Same goes for lemon tea - loads of the stuff. About the only thing that you are going to miss is the variety of crisps (they are all nacho-style) and the different chocolate (milk-based, instead of cream-based so not as tasty), however there are "British Candy Shops" all over the place so if you don't mind paying a bit more, you can get UK chocolate.

You will love Vancouver - and you are moving just when the weather is getting nice! Make sure you get out and do some camping!

Cheers,

Dunk

I always wondered what marmite is made of? Isn't it bad for children to live on that stuff?

Marmite claims to be made from Yeast extract, but I think it is distilled from old road tar leftovers.

I love it on toast with Philidelphia cheese!

Been in Vancouver for the last two weeks and been eating natively-purchased Marmite on toast every day for breakfast.

Some things, you just can't live without. Thankfully, there's no need to get it shipped over.

Cheers, Iain
