Hello All.
Trying to cover all options! What are the chances of earning a living on PEI? I'm engineering machinist to trade with loads of managerial experience and currently working as a project manager for international oilfield equipment company. Have in past had my own machineshop and could do that again .Other half is qualified as lab-technician (Biology) and has for the last 13 yrs. ran big computer-network at a local school. We have no preconceived ideas and see ourselves as very flexible and open to anything new.Are into horses
and long distance running :scared:
ANY info most welcome......oh and we HAVE PR visa !
Thanks. Bo and Edna

Little industry at all on PEI other than agriculture and seafood processing and of course tourism which is the biggy. Are there any machine shops on PEI? Dunno, google or yellow pages will help out. I imagine there is no oilfield business - opportunity in that industry in the East of Canada is primarily in Newfoundland with a bit in Nova Scotia. It is a beautiful place and I would happily live there if economics and family ties hadn't drawn us to Newfoundland. With the right attitude (and mebbe some funds behind you) anything can work!

You could be involved in mechanical repairs of all sorts of things
to do with the home and small industry - your own business.
Buy a place with a large garage or barn - away from a town or city limits - so as you can do as ya please - and not need or be impeded by zoning issues (planning permissions).
Plus you could both find a nice little P/T PAYE job.
Do not take on loads of "UK lifestyle debt" and you`ll be fine!

That's the way I was thinking ! Being into horses we'd need space(i.e. some serious acerage) anyway and if we buy the right kind of place ,there will either be some kind of suitable outbuilding or i'll put one up and kit it out as workshop.Add to that a portable or truck mounted welding set ( can do that as well) and it might just turn into a viable business........
Food for thought !
I can feel a recon trip coming on !!!
Appreciate your input. Will try and send karma.

Have replied to your e-mail.and yes i think the island could be the place for you as there are lots of properties with large outdoor building/barns etc. and you can buy many homes with anything from 1......100 acres.

Incidentally, I was at a company in Moncton, NB last week that is crying out for skilled CNC machinists & sheet metal workers.

Hi Atlantic xpat.
I know what you're saying.I expect to do a canadian welding cert.( Have had ASME certs. in the UK before) No such issues with machining though. After all if you are turning out cr...p work on a machine you either get fired
or ( If you're your own boss) your customers never come back!
Thanks for the feedback. The picture is forming ....Anybody...is it Zoom that fly Glasgow to Halifax? And where does Conferderation Bridge run from/to ?

Do not let concerns regarding certifications and such, stop you from setting up.
Officially you can work whilst "supervised" until certs` acquired - ya know what I mean.
I can assure you, if you are doing a job for a private citizen etc. they will go by references and how good a job ya do first.
Yes they have the same processes here as in the UK - for being "qualified" - but to see who works as a contractor in what ever industry - you`d think not!

Very interested in your comment re CNC machinists. We are currently looking to moving either to another province, or returning 'home' to the U.K.
We have not settled well in Ontario, for numerous reasons, and cannot see it getting any better after 3 years and three moves within Ontario.
Hubbie has been employed as a C.N.C machinist in Ontario, for all of that time, and as such has the "canadian experience"!
We would really appreciate the companys name.
Regards.

Hi Sunshine!
Sure sounds like you're in the wrong place ?? Only you can know what you're looking for ,but maybe a complete change of pace and environs will do the trick? I'd have thought it worth a try , rather than ....you know what... :scared:
Good Luck to you !
