I do not know all the details but I do think there was something in the health insurance that covered emergency treatments overseas (can be totally wrong on this).

But once the policy is cancelled this will no longer be feasible in the sense that she has automatic access to the health care upon arrival in Canada? If she lets the insurance lapse, and as a Canadian citizen she can apply for the health insurance when she returns, but will need to wait three months for it to begin?
But being out of the country and relying on her Canadian insurance MIGHT cause problems, you said she was going to fly back if there was a problem, but what if that problem meant that she physically COULD'NT fly and needed repatriation, would the insurance cover that. I think she is on a really sticky wicket here, and private health insurance where she is would seem as though it would, at least, give her peace of mind.

Just checking, but she's aware that she'll no longer be eligible for the NHS? So she'd have to pay for any non emergency treatments? And as Mike has said, if she's ill it may well be that there won't be the option to fly back to the UK anyway.

Think the problem is with Canadian coverage, nothing to do with the UK, she was talking about flying back to Canada for anything that was needed.

Ah, ignore me completely then! Agree that it's not feasible to expect to be able to fly home for treatment though, if you're really ill then that's the last thing you'd want to do, and a 'fit to fly' certificate is unlikely too.

So right. Just last week an Australian friend, on holiday in Bali, had a stroke and he cannot get home as he doesn't have private insurance including medical evacuation, and the airlines wont take him without a 'fit-to fly' certificate, which no doctor will sign.
