We had this issue and despite them changing our address to NS and despite sending numerous letters as well as talking to them on the phone we kept getting fined. Eventually we managed to get someone who knew what they was doing with a letter we sent registered post that they finally acknowledge we lived abroad had done everything we could to get them to acknowledge this and gave us our money back and cancelled our requirements to complete a tax form and for the last 4 years not had any issues

I'v e just spoken to a nice young Geordie who informs me they should have shut down the account after receiving the P85.
NO fine for me!!! Yay! and phew as the interest was already at 130 quid before the letter arrived!.
The nice young man fancies coming to Canada. I told him about this site.....

HMRC asked us to fill in an SA109 last year. I thought that was to do with residence. Is the SA109 just about being non resident but having some UK income like rental income (which we no longer have but did have)?

Thanks!

We arrived in 2013 as well. I suspect you should have filed for taxes in Canada in 2015 since you would have become resident for tax purposes by virtue of your time spent in Canada. If you have an SIN you should be able to get CRA to couterstamp the HMRC form 'Canada Individual'. This alerts HMRC to the fact that CRA confirm you are paying tax here and they will issue you with a tax code of NT (No Tax) and that should end the matter and allow most income you have in the UK to be paid without tax.

Thanks! I've filed taxes for several years here but I didn't know about the CRA stamp thing. I always show the accountant what I've had to pay in UK, which hasn't been all that much but sometimes tax has been PAYE tax deducted for short online one-off contracts I've had.

The thing is we left in 2013. I did returns covering 2013 and 2014 and sent a p85 (I think thats what it is called) saying I had left the country.
I have nothing to declare in the UK, we don't own any property and i have a bank account with about a fiver in it.

Was there something else I should have done?

I feel your pain....they are a bunch of incompetent imbeciles!!! i have had the same treatment, depsite jumping through hoops for them last year, and you cant reason with them, they just keep repeating and recycling the same old drivel!!

Worst of it is they owe ME money!!! It really does get my back up!!

I got a lovely cheque from them last year which is why i was so surprised. The nice man assures me me he has cancelled the fine and won 't hear from them again......

We have filed here since we arrived so can produce a paper trail if it gets messy!
