Re: Lunch time boozing in Canada.
Where I work the guy in the cube over has a beer fridge under his desk. Before the down turn there used to be a company provided keg every Friday at 4pm, and by VP has a big beer fridge hidden in a filing cabinet! For "conservative" Ottawa where I work there are plenty of folk that like a beer!

I agree, but why lunchtime? Go after work or, if it is the "something for nothing" point of view, finish the day early and slope off to the pub.
If people can't make it through a working day without alcohol, I think there is something wrong. I can't make it through the day without a quick tug at regular intervals ... the scheduling of my average 9 to 5 is horrendous. Especially when I'm doing open heart surgery. |

Re: Lunch time boozing in Canada.
Here its a teaspoon of normal beer and bye bye driving licence. Most people have to drive to work so no-one drinks at lunchtime. We do have a very light beer which is almost a fizzy drink that tastes of beer.

Now we all know that in the UK this is accepted and normal. But what about here in the land of liquor poor outs and state owned off licences? It's time we found out!
Where I worked prior to coming over last year, a drink at lunch time was a sure way to getting the tin tack. |

I'm actually surprised by how large the 'it's unprofessional' result is. Wasn't expecting that.

I guess that depends upon how face to face one's work is. It would be considered totally unprofessional in my office but, if one worked in a call centre, etc and one wasn't totally pissed, I guess it would be deemed less so. |

Re: Lunch time boozing in Canada.
While it's frowned on in my current company, it wouldn't be a formal disciplinary thing. The rules are also somewhat different when lunching with clients or suppliers. I was taken to lunch by a supplier the other week. Our account exec made it pretty clear, by tone if not words, that he would welcome the opportunity to have a beer, but wouldn't unless we joined him. I selflessly took the plunge.
Having said that, I'm so far out of practice on the whole lunchtime drinking thing that even a single beer with lunch pretty much put paid to a productive afternoon. I really could have done with an hour or so's snooze at around 3pm. |

I guess so. I work in an office, but don't have to deal with the hoi polloi which makes slacking off and laziness quite easy. Still, back in the day I've been on site and had pub lunches with clients without any problems.

Re: Lunch time boozing in Canada.
Wow, and here I am wishing I could get anyone to go for a drink AFTER work. They seem to all prefer going for a coffee and during a three month contract I could not get anyone into a bar.
Back in London a pint at lunch is considered the norm I think. Well, judging by the number of people in the pubs at lunch on a daily basis anyway. My best ever lunchtime session.... We had just finished Phase 1 of a multi phase project with a legal firm and their director pulled me and my colleague off our desks and said he was taking us to the pub on him. That was around 2pm and we both left the pub at sometime around 10pm absolutely blitzed. Sometime during this our Project Manager showed up and tried to give us a hard time as we should be working but he also failed to deny that same director and he also ended up blitzed. Great day.... :-) |
