Luggage Allowance
 

We're flying out to Canada with Air Transat and our baggage allowance is 20kg each:eek: This is a one way trip and we are going with two kids and three dogs and loads and loads and loads of bags. Are the airlines a bit flexible with people who are immigrating or do they get every last penny out of you that they can? Is there a maximum that they will allow you to take and if so what it is? Many thanks:D

Wouldn't want to say what Air Transat would do.

When hubby went in Feb on his one way trip on Zoom he was about 7kg over weight for premium and they didn't bat an eyelid - no extra charges.

However, I am going in May and Canadian Affair have rung to offer me premium service and when I refused have already warned me they charge £6 per kg for excess baggage.

Seems to be a bit random if you ask me. Most of the budget airlines tend to try and squeeze every last bit of money out of you if they can.
I've found that some check in staff seem to stick rigidly to the rules and others hardly seem to check the weight.
Don't forget that there is a maximum weight per bag too so if any one bag is over 32kg they won't except it (supposedly)

Contact them by phone, explain the situation to them and they may be able to come to some accommodation.

We tried to up grade partly because the baggage allowance is more but can't as it is fully booked!

Don't forget that there is a maximum weight per bag too so if any one bag is over 32kg they won't except it (supposedly)

But this is due to Health and Safety Regulations. I know when this law first came in we had a "double" case for me and Phil checkin made us take stuff out of this case and put it in the kids and our had luggage to bring the case down to 30kg.

Certainly when we flew out a few of the bags were over the limit and we werfe asked if we were emigrating. when we said yes nothing more was done. I agree that it seems to be down to the individual.

Try wearing a load of clothes - they don't weigh you. when you're on the plane fill up the lockers as you undress down to a more suitable number of layers:lol: :lol:

If you're a little over then its normally not a problem. However it sounds like you're going to be way over. I would give them a call and explain, make sure you mention that you tried to upgrade!

Another tip - if possible put any heavy items in hand luggage

We were about 30 kg over between the two of us (Zoom, Premium Economy). Someone didn't realise quite how many pairs of shoes they had...

In the end they charged us for about 10 kg excess, which was fine all things considered. For the first time ever, we had our hand luggage weighed. A shame, because that was a large part of us being over the limit. We had to check in enough stuff so that our hand luggage was closer to 5 kg.

The check in girl at Gatwick weighed the dog (smallish dog) then off set the difference in his weight and the maximum against our 'overweight' luggage.

From what I've seen it is totally random.

On my last trip over we were over the limit and they didn't bat an eyelid on the way out but on the way back they even weighed the had luggage and wanted a couple of hundred for excess.

While throwing stuff away I was called over by a different member of staff and was allowed to check in everything for free.

Luggage allowance i thought was 23Kg not alot extra but a bit. I also think hand luggage allowance with air transat is higher, possibly 10kg. We flew with them when we emigrated in sept. we did have to pay excess on some stuff even though we had explained situation. But they didnt charge us for all that was over. We thought it was 23 but when we got our ticket it says 20 so we are going to stuggle a bit. We are bringing Chrisi65's dog over with us as well as two of our own so we are going to pretty well loaded down. Hope to meet up with you soon. Thanks for the good wishes. Angela

Have checked the website it def says 23kg . perhaps print it out and take it with you. :sneaky:

The ticket clearly states it is only 20 and hand baggage is 5.:unsure:
