Love Canada, not sure about the people

I'm am not a country music fan or a George Jones fan. But George Jones does have one song whose lyrics fit well into the life of an expat. The song is called "Choices". I am sure it is on youtube.

Nah i'm not calladice. I know who that is though!
What the bloody hell is figjam? is it related to toe jam or head cheese?
I'm very good at playing at being offended. I rarely am and I don't mind being called the odd name......I do call other people names sometimes, but not badly or seriously....It's like a bit of pepper on your dinner.
Surely the lowest common denominator of a society is the majority? I could easily sterotype the Brits.....{bad teeth anyone and drunkeness}, but hey, we are talking about Canadians.
I am going to check out that George Jones tune.

Being in the 'boonies' my exposure to some of the nationalities you mention is somewhat limited, but you would be surprised. However a large number of ex pat Brits........so stop whining

Dont play at being offended around here, I dont have much patience with people who waste the mods time pretending to be offended.... and the name calling thing will only fly so far here too. The rules are pretty simple as pointed out above. If you want to play by the guardians rules then post there instead
Stereotypes are so very condescending and insulting I find, and seldom present the truth in any situation.

Alanis Morissette? Google is your friend ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Canadians
Celine is not listed under 'Criminals'

Somewhat tenuous definition of 'Canadian' -
"Bell, Alexander Graham (1847-1922) - born in Scotland, invented the telephone in Canada and developed it in the United States"

And featured in the "Greatest Canadians" show. Lets face it, most canadians dont have to dig back too far to find they came from somewhere else originally, its a characteristic of the nation that you dont have to be born here to be considered canadian... almost part of the charm.

This thread was amusing until it lost the OP; I read through the next 3-4 pages hoping she would come back, but no.
Interesting though whether it is possible to love a country but not its people -I don't think so; just a thought on the original theme of the thread.

Someone made a good point earlier - sometimes it seems people want an 'old fashioned' country but with modern people.

Aggression (if that's really what it is here) seems to occur when broad generalizations are made, or when opinion is presented as fact. If you avoid those pitfalls I don't think anyone receives a bad reception on BE.

Re: Love Canada, not sure about the people
I have posted on a few different boards over the years and this is by far the most aggressive to new people that I have ever come across.
This seems to be a board where a lot of people don't want opinions they want platitudes. It shows a startling lack of intelligence by some, but not all people.
I have noticed the bright sparks though.
I have a lot of self confidence and I love to argue in a friendly way and I love it if people have a different view point because it stimulates wit and discussion and a lot of people here do get that. However, some people seem to be seriously offended by other peoples opinions when it isn't their own. The problem is that this board has too many of those people.
I'm thinking it's age, too many older folk not that I'm such a spring chicken.
Look at the sparkling wit and repartee of the UK Guardian board for how it should be done!!!
Anyway, my opinion {ducking and shaking with fear} is that Canadians for the most part are nice. They don't show their feelings as much as Brits and I often notice, in Ontario particularly, that they often scowl or seem aggressive when they interact with you. However, I have come to realise that this is often a problem of fear and low self esteem with them this exterior often hides a very kind heart.
A lot of them are simple too, liking what I consider very dull. They don't like to debate except the very odd person who is usually out the mainstream.
The way to really get on with a Canadian is to love hockey and know millions of stats about games and players. To think going to Tim Hortens is a real treat and Denny's is a gourmet delight. To shop in Walmart with them and marvel at the deals and to own George Jones cd's and love nascar.
There are the intelligensia though and often they are a true delight. I love, love, many Canadians.

That's just the kind of inane comment I'd expect from a Rich. In all my years, everyone I've met called Rich is an idiot. q.v. you get my drift.
