London and Thunder Bay

Hi folks,
I've lately been shifting my focus eastwards from BC and have been looking at Ontario. I've checked out London and Thunder Bay as possible cities to investigate when I do my recce. They both seem to have apartments available in my price bracket (around $700 - $800 per month). But I'm wondering about employment opportunities. I qualified on the basis of civil service experience, but am not over-keen to go back into that. But I don't mind. It'll have to be something, though - especially in the short term - where I won't need any particular qualifications. I'm happy to do store clerking, delivery driving, cleaning - whatever.
Can anyone who lives in or near either of these cities offer me any help, please? Do you think I'll have any problems finding a job that'll enable me to maintain a lifestyle based on around $1500 - $1800 a month... which roughly equates to how I currently live in the UK (I'm not in it for the money, see - I'm happiest living fairly frugally!)
Thanks a lot for any help.

My point is that if you are considering Thunder Bay and London why not consider Winnipeg , Saskatoon or many other places? If your criteria is a reasonably priced apartment and general job opportunities won't almost any city in Canada be OK to start? There's apartments in your price bracket here in Ottawa for example and many times more job opportunities than in somewhere small and isolated like Thunder Bay.
Or is there something more specific you are after?

Nick name Winterpig......If choice tho between that or thunder bay. I think I still pick Winterpig......
Thunder bay is in the middle of now where. Northern Ont. Is a bit isolated. Harsh winter too and the black flies in the summer once you get outside the town. Better soak your garments in white vinegar and don't wear any deodorant.

I really like London Ontario. House prices are great $120,000 to $190,000 buys you something nice if you look. Old South and Old North. The further away from the Uni. of course and the Core and North London are the what most people pick as areas to live. The further NW London the high the price $170,000 upwards. Parts of the East End are great too. But it has a bit of stigma. So buying houses in this part of town is cheap. You can pick up some bargains. It just run down and some the houses have odd neighbors. Mostly off Horton street area. It Gets better the closer you get to Highbury and east of it. Renting pick old south and the core north, old north but stay way from the UNI areas b/c of noise. You pay around $650 upwards for 1 bed. 2 beds start around $750. Byron/Lambeth are all very nice middle class areas to live as well. You also have St Thomas about 20 minutes south which is dirt cheap 100-150K will buy you a big house in the best parts. But it is very sleepy and you have to commute for work. I consider London. But I pick Toronto. I need a bit more excitement. But it great and affordable city and half the price of Kitchener they pretty similar however. I don't think you can go wrong. No idea on things to do. It has lot festival almost every weekend in the summer and bike paths and malls and a stadium. Close to Grand bend for the beach.

Seriously you'd prefer Winnipeg.. perhaps the worst place in Canada/? I was in Thunder Bay from June last year until March this year its not a bad place t live, cost of living is really low, summers are amazing on lake superior, easy way over the border to the US for cheap gas and stuff... But it is a bit remote for sure, also the winters are a killer there, on average -40C when I was there.
But personally despite it being small and out of the way, I liked the place, its got everything you need, the airports fine...
But I wouldnt live Fort William site, that part of town sucks, Port Arthur is alot nicer, especially around Waverley Park (where I used to live!) house prices are dirt cheap.
One thing though... THe labour market is really screwed around there, its difficult to find work there. Im a geologist so works pretty easy (lots of companies have exploration offices in TBay for Northern Ontario), but since the logging place was shutdown jobs are few and far between...
If I were you id look at Calgary or somewhere with your experience... or possibly Ottawa...

Not easy in a place so vast...
