One of my daughters has her first mate's ticket and sails professionally most summers, she got started here:

that's a good way to keep teens out of the pub for the summer.

ABYC, lovely club! We've got reciprocals there and have popped over. It seems a lot of clubs feel sorry for us so we get discounted rates for overnight stays, have used that at QCYC.

I agree ABYC is non-snob, unlike RCYC, which I shall not say any more about.

Being blunt, I don't think you're the gun totin' type I had in mind. I doubt you'd be walking around downtown toronto with a 9 millie shoved down the back of your pants whilst your bling shines on.

When one of my non-sailing daughters was a lifeguard for the city she was paid about $12/hr. She took a second job guarding at the RCYC's winter facility (by the Bata Shoe Museum) which paid, iirc $26. She lasted three weeks, perhaps six shifts, before deciding there are some brats you can't tolerate for any money. I suggest that people who don't enjoy the RCYC might want to think twice about the OYS.

I used to sneak off work and go once around the island. Just watch out for the ferries and, especially, the island airport exclusion zone. Rather stiff fines for being careless with the latter.

I second that, do no even think about ignoring the warning buoys and thinking "I'm small enough to ignore that". You'll have the marine unit on you very quickly, a) because their zodiac is very, very quick (had personal experience of this) b) their station is very close by.

Also, do NOT enter the gap where the airport ferry runs unless you're under power, again, a big no-no. If you do have power, stick to the limit, or again, Mr Police Officer will pay you a visit.

Oh and RIDE (drunk drive checkpoint) on the water is rather interesting, moreso when the cop is on a jetski/jetbike.

I've got a LOT of time for the TO marine unit, very professional, helpful and calm when all is going to hell in a handbasket.

Really? OYC is a bit snooty and stuck up then? I've not been down to wherever it is they are located, but we've been in contact with one of their chaps. I think they need the memberships as after they expressed interest they were repeatedly contacting us to see if we were going to become members.

We are looking for somewhere local where we can get a dock/slip, as we are on a mooring ball at present and either have to row out to the boat, or wait for the club's water taxi, which isn't typically running at 9 in the morning.

Sorry meant the Oakville Yacht Squadron. Care to drop me a PM as to why you think it's snooty? I am very interested plus don't want to take this thread too far Off Topic.
