I wouldn't discount Vancouver 
It's def. possible to rent something for $900 or less. I can see you in east van - much cheaper rent there and more left wing/arty than other parts of van. Try Hastings/Sunrise, Kingsway, parts of Commercial Drive, South east van, those kind of areas for cheaper rent, good transit, etc.
