This is yesterdays headlines from the Red Deer Advocate (daily paper)- The website for the express(weekly paper) has still got last weeks stories....But will no doubt run the more important stories the Advocate has already printed, sad about the boy who drowned.

Contrary to some radio reports, Mayor Neil Ellis reiterated today that he stands by his comment in an interview Tuesday that it is unlikely the $475,000 advanced as a loan to the Belleville Family Medical Centre will be recovered.



Yesterday would have been about a 5 year old who was missing for 36 hours in a cornfield near Picton being found safe and well.

She recently met the elderly man who had planted it as a young soldier before taking ship to Europe in WWII; she emigrated to Canada as a young girl and is grateful to Allied soldiers who battled to liberate her country. "And here I am, living under this soldier's tree since 1975. This is a story that should be told every Remembrance Day.")

Assuming we're talking printed paper rather than internet (as that will now be full of Chantal and flooding), the St. John's Telegram front page leads with:

"Marching out of History" - Signal Hill military tattoo keeps history alive.

"Battle of the Bans" - Feds launching WTO challenge of Belgian seal embargo.

"Province calls the shots - Williams remends Crosbie" - all to do with a flap over whether Grenfell College in Cornerbrook should become a University.

All quite dull really. Tommorrows will be more dramatic I'm sure.

In Winnipeg

For all those planning to live here, the crime we have is very contained in certain neighbourhoods, and those are the ones where one would not want to live. Most areas are beautiful and safe

The headline on the front page of the Bromley News Shopper isn't very news-worthy, so I picked a page at random and it was page 3:

"Dead hamster left outside charity shop"
apparently someone left the hamster still in its cage outside the local Oxfam. However, "thanks to Ms X, the hamster was given a decent burial in the communal gardens at her home".

"Jailed for setting mantrap"
Local man was fed up being burgled so he set some mantraps to catch the burglars and got 18 months in prison.

Oh, and the Elmstead craft club is meeting on August 13..."Try your hand at teabag folding :blink: or making a personal card".

Elk getting birth control

They may make camera-toting tourists happy, but the over population of elk in and around Banff has caused Parks Canada officials to take what some might call drastic measures -- injecting them with birth control.

Parks will test a vaccine on 10 elk cows over a two-year pilot period beginning in August -- if the environmental assessment is approved -- a Parks Canada spokesperson confirmed.

Emissions cuts felt locally - Cochrane industrial plants must cut emissions - Alberta recognizes we need to deal with climate change - we are the largest producer in Canada ...

Cochrane immune to scarcity of doctors - blah blah shortage of 1000 doctors in Alberta .. blah blah ... but 12 out of 17 family doctors in Cochrane are accepting new patients ....

Video shows brutal attack on man
Questions about the safety of homeless Calgarians and the police response are being raised after a frenzied attack near the Calgary Drop-In Centre last weekend -- captured by shelter security cameras -- that saw three assailants batter a man with large rocks, kicks and punches before the bloodied victim shuffles out of view.

Drop-in centre executive director Dermot Baldwin said he is extremely worried about the condition of the man, unidentified, but believed to be homeless.
