Interestingly, a reduction in the number of "indecent acts" accounted for the overall fall. Curtain Closes on MASS (the demise of a local arts cooperative, Music and Shared Space) Officer Fires Shots During Police Pursuit (police are searching for a stolen Cadillac Escalade - honestly, the criminal underclass has no taste...) Preventing Weeping over Old Willow (this is quite a cute human-interest story about a Lithuanian lady battling with the city authorities to save a willow tree on her property. She recently met the elderly man who had planted it as a young soldier before taking ship to Europe in WWII; she emigrated to Canada as a young girl and is grateful to Allied soldiers who battled to liberate her country. "And here I am, living under this soldier's tree since 1975. This is a story that should be told every Remembrance Day.") |
Re: local newspaper headlines
Assuming we're talking printed paper rather than internet (as that will now be full of Chantal and flooding), the St. John's Telegram front page leads with:
"Marching out of History" - Signal Hill military tattoo keeps history alive. "Battle of the Bans" - Feds launching WTO challenge of Belgian seal embargo. "Province calls the shots - Williams remends Crosbie" - all to do with a flap over whether Grenfell College in Cornerbrook should become a University. All quite dull really. Tommorrows will be more dramatic I'm sure. |

In Winnipeg
"Three shotguns, a magazine and ammunition were seized this morning by Winnipeg police at a Redwood Avenue home. " "Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver Milt Stegall was named the CFL’s offensive player of the week on Wednesday. " "A man shot in the buttocks by Winnipeg police two weeks ago has been hit with a new charge of trying to grab an officer's gun as he lay injured on the ground, according to court documents obtained by the Free Press. " "Children at a Charleswood housing co-operative will watch their dreams for the ultimate playground get built in a day. " For all those planning to live here, the crime we have is very contained in certain neighbourhoods, and those are the ones where one would not want to live. Most areas are beautiful and safe |
Re: local newspaper headlines
The headline on the front page of the Bromley News Shopper isn't very news-worthy, so I picked a page at random and it was page 3:
"Dead hamster left outside charity shop" apparently someone left the hamster still in its cage outside the local Oxfam. However, "thanks to Ms X, the hamster was given a decent burial in the communal gardens at her home". "Jailed for setting mantrap" Local man was fed up being burgled so he set some mantraps to catch the burglars and got 18 months in prison. Oh, and the Elmstead craft club is meeting on August 13..."Try your hand at teabag folding  or making a personal card". Flossie |
Re: local newspaper headlines
Headline in this weeks Banff Crag & Canyon
Elk getting birth control Tuesday July 31, 2007 They may make camera-toting tourists happy, but the over population of elk in and around Banff has caused Parks Canada officials to take what some might call drastic measures -- injecting them with birth control. Parks will test a vaccine on 10 elk cows over a two-year pilot period beginning in August -- if the environmental assessment is approved -- a Parks Canada spokesperson confirmed. |

From Nottingham, UK - Evening Post Morning Edition:
DUO DENY SAMURAI STABBING http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/di...pNodeId=133951 then the Evening Edition headline was GUNN FOUND GUILTY (for several shootings, killings and lots of other crimes) http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/di...pNodeId=133951 On the positive side, there's always something to talk about. Hmmm. |
Re: local newspaper headlines
For a bit more greusome info:
http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/di...pNodeId=216889 This is becoming the norm in our tiny 270'000 population city. Awful for anyone who isn't completely unhinged or devoid of any concept of reality. Don't visit Nottingham. No matter how many Robin Hood Movies the USA makes. It's awful - I've lived here all my life and the good people are being swamped by this foul stench of a lawless underclass. A real shame nothing is being done to help or stop it from escalating. Nottingham Police Force just got the worst results ever for a police force in the UK, and crime is spiralling while the local authorities try to convince everyone that it is falling by (according to a senior police officer) massaging those statistics (there's a new category called "miscellaneous crime" which is suddenly, on its inception, 50% of all recorded crime - LOL). It's a hilarious time in Nottingham at the moment, I've lived here all my life and you wouldn't believe what some areas are breeding!!! Contempt mainly... |
Re: local newspaper headlines

They haven't a cat in hells chnace of winning as basically everyone else's mums seem to do it for them, and even then their mums are more artistically gifted than me , so even if I did it they wouldn't win. Of course it could be Its the taking part though!! Gryphea |

Re: local newspaper headlines
Its interesting (to me anyway) that todays Headline on the NATION globe and mail website (Canadas "Daily Telegraph" perhaps?) was regarding an elderly doctor who was robbed by a pan handler in a Vancouver church. He wasnt killed or even seriously hurt. He had given the guy $5 a few days running and then yesterday the guy snatched all his cash and pushed the elderly man to the ground.
Its sad that this happened, but I find it comforting that the editor still found it sufficiently shocking in Canada to run on the front page. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/ http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../National/home |

And one for the snake phobics, Are you a reptile killer? - All that roadkill isn't just accidental -- an Ontario study has found almost three per cent of drivers, the majority of them men, swerve to intentionally steamroll snakes and turtles on the road. |
Re: local newspaper headlines
And today's Time Colonist led with:
"This Uplands home is Canada's most expensive on the maket: $28.5 million: 'Trophy Portpeties' geared toward elist foreign buyers" - which is their third story in the last week about property prices... (http://www.canada.com/victoriatimesc...8-1e5e49ce904a) And the other front page news was: "The bride has white hair, not a white dress: couple in their 90s met, fell in love at seniors' residence" - which I'm surprised is news here in Victoria ;) |
