What kind of lifestyle are you looking for? What is your ideal place to live? It's hard to make recommendations without knowing a thing or two about what you're seeking. Langley (with exception to Fort Langley) is rural/suburban, the entire place built with the assumption that you have a car. Aldergrove is even more rural, meaning even more reliance upon having a car.

Likewise, I moved to Aldergrove, whilst still working in Langley without buying a car for a further 4 months.

There's not really many areas to "avoid" per say, most of Langley is decent, it is only really the core of the city that suffers from crime, and most of it is non-violent, just petty. You may want to live a decent distance from the busier roads in Langley such as 88th Ave and 200th St if you don't like road noise.
Aldergrove is a very rural / undeveloped part of Langley, most of the shops and things seem to be in the southern part close to the border, but I have spent much time there.
The nicest areas in my opinion are Fort Langley and Murrayville, though they are expensive due to being nicer than the surrounding area. Walnut Grove is a popular choice, and also has some nice areas if you explore the suburbs. I myself live in Willoughby, which is a place you may want to consider since it is full of lots of new developments such as Yorkson Creek, Red Maple Park and Milner Heights. It is just south of the Trans-Canada highway. This is the area I live in, however I probably will be leaving towards the end of the year since most of the houses are very packed together as it is a newer development. Not somewhere to live if you want to enjoy the north-american lots-of-open-space feel.

I agree with the previous poster, there are no real areas to avoid. Downtown has more issues than other areas, but in my opinion its not dangerous. I live in the downtown area in a condo. There is some drug activity, some prostitutes, but no one has ever bothered me or my family. There are a lot of families in the area.
As for the new developments in Langley like willoubhy and parts of walnut grove, the area there is extremely condensed. Parking is at a premium too since almost every new house has a basement rental suite.
Personally I really like Brookswood. In Brookswood they are the older style homes with proper green areas and they are not built right on top of each other.
Aldergrove is okay too, but there are some neighborhoods nicer than others too.
My advice, drive through the areas at different times of day and night to get a good idea.

I lived in Walnut Grove for around 7 months which is a very nice place, nice family area/Retirment area so its quiet and I enjoyed my time there. Im currently in Clayton Hights which is in Cloverdale, again a very nice area seems very new and lots of family activity. My girlfriends mother lives in central Langley and she's had some stuff stolen from the balcony(And thats not the worste place!).

If you can afford Fort Langley I'd move there.
I have friends in Walnut Grove. They have a "single family home" on a tiny lot that is so close to their neighbours that they can touch.
