I've watched clips of the Trailer Park Boys on the net and found some of it humorous, but I know I'd have to be living in Canada for a while to understand the fuller picture and humour etc. I liked Bubbles, the guy with the big glasses, who can be pacified with pickled eggs (wonder why he lives on his own and loves kitties). When we go back to Calgary for a holiday in March I hope to catch it on tv (if we're not too busy out sightseeing and looking at houses he, he :) ) As for the League of Gentlemen I reckon the BBC based the series on the town where I live, there are some odd characters and most of the inhabitants only seem to like local people. :p I used to work with a Canuck and asked him what he thought other Canadians would think of LoG and he was of the opinion they'd be horrified, especially by Edward and Tubbs in the 'local' shop. |

To be honest, some days i do really miss it but nothing so bad that a holiday wouldn`t cure. Some Sundays we wish we could get in the car for a drive to charming Scarborough!! York is very nice on the eye....Canadian cities are pretty ugly....but the outdoors is beautiful. because it is so big the great thing is that if on a beautiful sunny day you want to take a day trip somewhere you don`t have to worry about traffic jams in the country!! i always hated that on a day trip to the moors, dales whitby or wherever, if the sun was shining there would be people everywhere!!! my husband misses steak pies and some good chocolate you should love it. whereabouts in York are you living? the fact is, if we were having a hard time in uk I've only been here now for a few months, but the thing I miss so far are my family in the UK, good old english beer (although Steamworks isn't too bad), pork sausage rolls, not being able to just walk into a pub and find my own seat... That's about it I think. Much prefer the scenery here to Yorks, got everything in one place, mountains, city, ocean and just a short drive out to the country... ps sorry to change the theme of the thread, I like Little Britain too and so does the Canadian wife, wish I could buy it on DVD region 1!! |
Re: Little Britain......

Took the Canadian wife there once for a day trip. Was a very short trip... but that's just my opinion. :D

Re: Little Britain......
I love it, although some of it just isn't funny and is very predictable.
The scene that made me cringe the most was the lad that had the hots for his mate's gran. The toe sucking scene was purely disgusting! Tom Baker's voice with the garbage history lesson is great. Reminds me of some old British Empire - style propoganda documentary. Fat fighters, Yeah-but-no-but.., the shop, the only gay in the vill-age, the disabled guy and his best mate, the two transvestites etc etc. All top class stuff that is encoded to be funny only to British People (as Tom Baker might say) |

I just watched Trailer Park Boys (Series 4) and It's excellent, thanks for showing me something new. On the other hand I can't stand Little Britain (listened to all the radio shows & the 1st series of the tv show) as the humour is very basic. Also the office was something I couldn't get Into. |

These are the 'scores on the doors' from my Canadian wife:- Royle Family: Loves it - 1st place! (I agree) Fawlty Towers: Not funny at all The Fast Show: Not funny at all Little Britain: Not funny at all Dad's Army: Sweet old men but not very funny, not even "Don't tell him Pike!" The Office: Very good but is sometimes too mean Jamie Oliver: Slimy little sh*t (I agree) Ainsley: Liked him at first but became annoying (I agree) Nigella: Faked groans are very annoying (I agree) River Cottage: Loves it Football: Thinks it's boring Cold Feet: Liked it a lot (I hated it) The Avengers: Found it boring The Prisoner: Didn't understand Some Mother's do 'ave em: Found it boring Coronation Street: Loves it (but this is wearing off now) Rick Stein: Would leave me for him Star Wars: Boring (I'd leave her for Princess Leia) Louis Theroux: Loved Louis. Hated, I mean really hated Jimmy Saville (I can understand that) We actually don't watch too much TV in Canada, most of the shows listed below we watched in Hong Kong when we were totally bored of that city and barracaded ourselves in to get away from it all. |

This hour has 22 minutes/Royal Air Farce vs. Corner Gas (which is pretty good) ---- Have you noticed how Canada doesn't seem to have too many 'personalities'? Maybe I haven't been here long enough but the only I've noticed is Don Cherry. I can't see any equivalents to Tommy Cooper, Stephen Fry, Frank Muir. These guys had 'acts' but in the end they traded mainly on their personalities. |

Bloody Amazon.co.uk won't deliver DVD's to Canada though, why not? But.... Just ordered Little Britain DVD region 2 from these guys... Just have to wait for it to arrive, how exciting... www.sendit.com |
Re: Little Britain......
Little Britain isn't funny. It's tedious slapstick.
Trailer Park Boys is a masterpiece in the same way that the Royle Family is -- both require local knowledge to appreciate the characters. I think The Office is hands-down the best comedy ever produced for television. |
