To be fair, used car salesmen have a terrible reputation, and they bring it on themselves. There is no expected repeat business and therefore no attempt to build that rapport.

In my experience there are all sorts of fun and games going on; "admin" fees tacked on all over the place without any sort of explanation, descriptions for cars which are wildly inaccurate, price lies in adverts and on the phone (100km round-trip waste of time - thanks muchly), obvious crash-damaged cars, $500 "deposit" needed just to test drive... the list goes on.

I knew some shady dealers back in the UK, but over here they have them soundly beaten!

I think in North America it is more common for someone to work on commission alone where as that doesn't happen much in Europe and most people will get at least a basic guaranteed salary unless they're taken on under some sort of self-employed sales contract.

It's for the same reason that most waiting staff in North America will rely on tips in order to survive. It's a bit sad really.

Iv been studying main dealer websites in the gta for the past couple of months now. The European manufacturers look to give a basic + commission (like I’m on in the UK now). The Korean and American manufacturers are commission based only. So its going to be the luck of the draw. But I’m up for commission only to give it a go.
