Default leaving the house

hi

I wonder if any one has gone over leaving the house in the UK still on the market?
How easy/hard was the selling from overseas?
Also the computer we have at thsi end is quite new, do they ship Ok and work over there or is it not worth it?

Thanks

Jo

Hi Bear

As I am left to sell house whilst hubby has started work in Canada and knowing all of the stresses and strains that this puts on you and the family I would say put the house under Power of Attorney with a solicitor and everyone make the move together.

If you instruct your solicitor and Estate Agent to act on your behalf they are bound by law to do so. Sales can also be dealt with via Email as confirmed by our solicitor.

I am going to hang on a little while longer - been on my own here 5 1/2 weeks and it is hell - the only advice that I can offer is NOT to split your family up as you come across so many little problems that seem to be everest as you are on your own.

On the Comp side - hubby took a laptop over there and everything ok in Canada with it he has just bought a wireless router and re hooked it up. Know loads of people who have taken their PC's with them and dont appear to have a problem. Think you just need to buyer a converter but there have been loads of threads on here about converters.

My wife and daughter will be in the same situation come April 9th. Needless to say she isn't looking forward to it.

Thanks for replies
if it was the OH who had got the job over there I wouldn't be too bothered about staying here with kids as he has worked away for long periods in the past.
As it is me that has got the job it's more difficult as the kids would be poisened, the dogs would starve(they won't eat their tea if he feeds them) not bad judges
the house would never sell if he was looking after it.

i think the best thing to do is to leave the house and all go over as you say Gaynor.
I am awaiting WP as we speak and have just had the first shipper round this am for a quote
Watch us fail at the first fence and not get a WP
Not that I'm pesimistic but if it all comes through we should fly on the 1st June

car boots here we come

Check your insurance policy, it probably doesn't cover a vacant property after 31 days?

Search the archive for Snave's posts - he had a dreadful time trying to sell up his UK house from here.

I wasnt that bothered about being left behind - the problem being is not knowing when you are going to be together again and that is what really is the most upsetting part of it. You can have the phone, MSN, BE and Skype but it is truly not the same as having a cuddle off the man you love.

We had hoped to complete the sale of our flat before we left last year, but it dragged on "under offer" beyond the point at which we had to leave for Canada... didn't hesitate to grant a limited power of attorney to our solicitor who dealt with the whole thing incredibly efficiently by phone and email. It was still a bit stressful, with our purchaser having a few last minute wobbles that made us think for a while that the whole thing would fall to pieces and we'd have to put it on back on the market & start again, but it worked out in the end for us and meant that we didn't have to split up the family (just as well, really, as OH was 7 months pregnant at the time, and wouldn't have been allowed to fly if we'd delayed much longer)

On the computer side, laptops should just plug in and work anywhere - don't know of any that don't have a universal vontage transformer in the power "brick". For a desktop you can either buy a step-up transformer or replace the power supply unit (PSU) in the case - for older PCs this is a good option anyway as new ones tend to (a) draw less power and (b) have much quieter cooling fans. If your PC is new, the choice is probably marginal for you, but in either case there's no real problem shipping a PC. We bought a transformer so we could run our UK printer and all the other peripheral bits & pieces without having to buy new, but when the first major component dies we'll probably replace the whole shooting match as it's all a bit long in the tooth and starting to look a bit old and slow (not unlike its owner... )

Most desktop PC's have a switch on the back where you can select 110 instead of 240 - you shouldn't have to change the power unit. We brought two laptops and they work just fine.

I'd heard that, too - I guess ours was just one of the unfortunate few that didn't have the magic switch

Gaynor I second what you are saying - hubby left me to sell the house too - slightly better situation than you - we had an offer, I followed 6 weeks after hubby and we completed another 3 weeks after that (my legal bods were close to useless and didn't follow up stuff as needed). It took a long time for me to forgive hubby for all the crap he left me with - saying I should do car boot sales etc to get rid of stuff, he honestly didn't realise there was still so much left to do, he also was upset with me for not supporting him as much in his new job and stuff - I was just so stressed with the house - he was stressed with his job aaaaaggggghhhhh! All ok now - if we had to do it again it would be as a family.

Honestly, I would suggest leaving the computer (they don't ship well because of the time difference), so just leave it with your husband and dogs then simply bring the house over here.
