Default LCD Televisions.

Ive used the search but can't find the answer im looking for. Can anyone tell us if we will be able to take an lcd tv from the UK to Canada, will it be ok to use a transformer? The reason I ask is that our old analogue telly of 12 years is on it's last legs so we need to get a new one!!

Yes it will and should show both NTSC and PAL picture formats fine. My UK Plasma is fine, although my Canadian LCD needs a converting DVD player to show both format discs.

So , yes.

How long is it before your anticipated departure?

Can you not get a cheap used analogue set for the interim?

Or is that not a practical solution?

That's what I'd recommend. If the OP joined up with their local Freecycle group there are always people giving away old (but working) CRT TVs when they upgrade.

We are only right at the very start, looooong way to go yet! Up until a month ago we had been planning on going to OZ! We have now firmly decided that Canada will suit us all better especially as my husbands job is on the shortage list My husband has is heart on a big lcd (boys and their toys lol), if we knew it would work in Canada we'd probably just go ahead and get one now.

Woah hang on a second- you'll need to check the specific make/model before you go making any expensive mistakes.

I bought a 42" plasma just over 12 months ago, and having checked with both the retailer and the manufacturer (Hitachi), mine wont work in Canada.

Anyone know how much step-up transformers cost?

Transformers are a lot of hassle; personally I wouldn't buy a TV unless it was dual-voltage and dual-standard, and even then you'll be paying a fair amount of money to ship it over. I can't help but feel you'd be better off getting a cheap TV for now and then buying a new one after you move.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, unfortunately I bought mine over 2 years ago at a cost of 2K - would pain me to get rid of it for peanuts.....

Yes, as I answered the question you first posted. I agree with another poster, the transformer is a bit of a pain to switch on with a button, but I didn't want to sell a perfectly good 12 month old plasma for nothing when it works perfectly well in my basement family room.

Downside = you need a universal dvd player to convert the PAL signal to NTSC as TVs in Canada only show NTSC, but I agree with you... I would buy a cheap one and dump it and start fresh.

about $20 - $40, depending upon the wattage you require.

Not really true: old TVs won't play PAL and some new ones are deliberately crippled, but I've played both PAL and 50Hz HD video on my girfriend's relatives' LCD HDTVs. Either way, my PAL-converting DVD player cost $30 at Future Shop and one of her friends just bought a different model new for $15.

As you say, some not all, but with a UK Plasma or LCD, he wouldn't have that issue. But I won't bother arguing with you, I will agree to differ on a few points and agree with you on waiting until he is over here.

Here's an interesting one - my HD camcorder is 1080i, but 50hz, as it's a UK model - would a Canadian TV play that through HDMI ok?
