Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia - any views?
Hi there,
We are moving to Nova Scotia on a 3 year work permit in the next few weeks. We have been offered a very nice rental home in Lawrencetown and we are wondering what the area is like. Also does anyone know anything about the schools - Atlantic View and Ross Road? We spent 4 weeks travelling around NS but did not drive through Lawrencetown and you can not get a feel for a place on the internet!
Also is there anything similar to ofsted reports in Canada? This would be useful when researching schools.

I grew up in Cole Harbour, just up the road from Lawrencetown, towards Halifax. Lawrencetown itself is still fairly rural but Cole Harbour is now quite a bustling suburb, so if you live in Lawrencetown you will have easy access to everything (assuming you have a car, which you will need as public transit is extremely limited in the area). It would be a nice place for a family - lots of space, and of course the ocean is just on the other side of the road!
If you have specific questions I can try to answer them. Unfortunately I went to school across the harbour in Halifax, so don't know anything about the local schools. Just FYI, most provinces, NS included, do not have standardized exams and school rankings, so I don't think you will find anything like Ofstead reports. There are several threads on the school system on this site that can probably help you with what to look for.

Hi
We just bought a house there. We'll be having the keys on Friday. Yes, it's a little rural but it's only 15-20 minutes from the centre of Dartmouth. It's close to a couple of very nice beaches. You are no more than 10 minutes away from facilities like Cole Harbour Place which contain a librairy, ice rink, swimming pool, etc. There are quite a few supermarkets. It's about 15 minutes from the Micmac Mall. The sub division are quite nice without having all the houses stuck on each other.
To be honest, you need a car most places unless you live in the city centre of any town.
For us, it was exactly what we were looking for, loads of space just outside town.
Sorry, cant say much about the schools!!
Regards
