OK I know it may seem like a muppet question, but can ceiling lampshades be used in Canada or are the fittings different? I'm not taking light fittings but I have some new lampshades I would like to keep. Or is it not worth the bother of taking them down?

Lampshades are ok but forget about the bulbs.

Bear in mind that ceiling light fittings are probably not as common in Canada as in the UK. In the three houses I have lived in here, there were no ceiling lights in the reception rooms or bedrooms. That could just be coincidence.

I was wondering about that too. We have bought a house but I have never seen it and OH can't remember if it has lights or not! He went out on his own and bought it so I have only seen photos. :scared: :scared: :scared:

You're very trusting. My missus won't even let me buy clothes by myself. She does have some justification on that one, though.

Very interesting.

I don't think I've lived in a house that hasn't had ceiling fixtures in the bedrooms and what I would call the front entranceway. (Is that what a reception room is?)

What is frustrating in our present house is the bedroom ceiling lights are in the corner of the room. I'd like to know who thought that was a good idea?

Cheers
Steve

All my houses have had ceiling lights...however lots of them in our house now, are inlaid - is that a word? I don't know, but you know what I mean...they are flush with the ceiling. The lights in my sh*tty house in Edmonton only take a certain cover - it's round and ugly - but they also only can be turned on with those pull strings (talk about ancient )

We have a lot of ceiling lights, but they are fittings with various types of hard shades.... not quite like the "pendant" lamp from the UK where you could fit more or less any shade I think.

You could bring your shades, but you might not find they fit the fixtures that well....

No. I think what you are referring to is called a "front door". There is another word for "front entranceway". It is often used when describing our current prime minister. Or Britain's. Or that berk down south.

I wouldn't bother. Although there are ceiling lights here, the type you're thinking of which is typical in the UK, is not so common here (more in older homes, maybe), and as another poster said, recessed lighting (pot lights) are quite popular. Even if you did have the right type in your house; the chances of the shades fitting is slim, I would think.

Besides all of that - it's usual here when buying a house to have all light fixtures, floor coverings, window treatments (curtains and hardware), and some appliances included (unless otherwise specified in the offer to purchase). So basically, anything that's 'attached' to the structure stays, unless it's agreed otherwise.

(Unlike Germany, where they take everything - even the kitchen units, as well as the light bulbs!)
