The lady didn't pay tax!
I was in Zellers the other day & whilst queuing the lady in front of me spent $220 on christmas goodies ie. snow globes, pj's, toothpaste, slippers..... when she gave the cashier her credit card she told her "no tax". The lady showed her some sort of photo id and therefore didn't pay the tax.
Why didn't she have to pay & what was the id:confused: |

Why didn't she have to pay & what was the id:confused: http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/english/taxtips/rst/02.html There might be other reasons, but this is the first one that comes to mind. I was once presented with on while working at my family store, so I know that it can be done for that reason. |
Re: The lady didn't pay tax!
Why shouldn't an aboriginal person not pay tax, the rest of us do.
I got asked the other day if I would support the right of First Nations members to be allowed to live their traditional way of life without interference from politicians. I said that I would if they remembered that that traditional way of life included not getting money from the government or casino's. Either we treat everyone the same or it's reverse discrimination in favour to the aboriginals. |

Re: The lady didn't pay tax!
Having farm status on your property confers some tax saving perks too. I don't pay PST on farm related purchases.

. Its complicated and lots of politics etc is involved. Many groups exist as entities somewhat outside of straight canadian or US law. |

Yes they do. First Nations people often pay up just as everyone else does. To be tax exempt they have to use the goods on a reserve (in BC the goods have to be purchased on or delivered to a reserve for the person to get a tax exemption - or suppose to be) and the person has to be 'Status Indians' ... many First Nations/aborignal people are not 'Status Indians' and neither are Metis people or Inuit peoples. That idea that First Nations peoples pay no taxes is a myth... I can't believe that people actually still believe it. |

Either we treat everyone the same or it's reverse discrimination in favour to the aboriginals. Mindful of these differences and the history of these agreements it is easy to understand that they are quite fair and not discrimination. |

Semantics innit...OK "some" First nations who live on the reserve aka "Status Indians" dont pay tax. Is that better? I was in a hurry...had a meeting to get to. Who and in what context a person gets a tax exemption is an important distinction because 'that myth' is used by racists in Canada to promote their hatred. I'm not implying that you're a racist. I'm just suggesting why I don't think it's just semantics. |

I believe it because a lady I worked with who is a First Nations lady pays no taxes....I used to go shopping with her, and saw for myself; she also told me why because until then I had no idea about her heritage. |

Or she could, like me, be a member of a Top Secret, privileged and powerful organisation exempt from such trivialities.
A deposit of $1000 into my Swiss bank account might loosen my lips;) |

Re: The lady didn't pay tax!
I know in Cochrane I have one tenant who lived in 'affordable charity housing' and is first nations. She did not pay tax at all, and I actually had to evict her because she earned too much according to her bank statements which was the only proof of earning she could give me. But the good news is that I put her in one of my other rentals, which was far nicer.
The every first nations person (including children) in Cochrane also got $1000 from the goverment last Friday. They also get another $1000 in July. I do not know why, when and certainly do not understand the logic of it. But having emigrated here and now a canadian citizen I can certainly empthasis with fellow canadians when they see first nations not pay tax and then get paid $2000 per year. |

So would it not be a stretch to try and learn more about your first nations neighbours instead of griping about them getting money from the "government"? Perhaps the money is band money but distributed by the government, or maybe it's part of their treaty settlement from a long time back. Instead of being one of the crowd, educate yourself, it all goes to make you a better person and maybe even a better realtor. |

Your tenant likely has 'Indian Status' (ie, she has a status card, she is a 'Status Indian', she's registered as an Indian with Indian Affairs - fed government). There are FN people who are registered - and they are entitled to the benefits relating to treaties, land claims, Indian Moneys, etc. There are FN people who are not registered because they do not qualify or because they've chosen not to be 'Status Indians.' FN people without 'status', Inuit and Metis people do not have the same exemption from paying taxes as a 'Status Indian' has. I know a FN woman who has Indian Status and she receives various benefits and doesn't pay tax but I also know a FN woman does not have status and pays taxes as most people do. The reality is there are Aboriginal people who do not pay taxes and there are Aboriginal people who do and whether they do or don't pay often varies by context as well. Also, there are a lot of Canadians, me being one of them, who are not bothered one iota by the perceived tax breaks and benefits that Status Indians receive. Not all payers of Canadian taxes share the view that you have empathy for. |
