Must be quite hard to drink fizzy wine on horseback. Possibly fairly messy, too.

And precarious, which is what got me thinking about hospitals.

I've got a can of 50% Boots' DEET stuff lying around somewhere.

Anyone know why you can't get it here (50% stuff, I mean - not Boots')?
Are there any side-effects with DEET?

Lots, its a pesticide after all, hence the controversy over its use, especially on Kids. Follow the instructions and you'll be OK. In a recentish study it was suggested that frequent and prolonged exposure to DEET by topical application, especially when in conjunction with exposure to other pesticides or chemicals, causes serious, diffuse brain cell death and behavioral changes in laboratory rats. The researchers warn the public to use DEET with caution, especially among populations like children who are more vulnerable to brain defects, and not to use it on babies under 2 months at all.

Higher concentration means more chance to accidentally ingest a harmful amount.

Plus it eats certain plastics too. And it smells pretty unpleasant.

However the downside is not as great as that of insect borne diseases like West Nile, so its a trade off. I'm looking forward to seeing how the non Deet stuff I ordered does though, I know enough not to stick my deety hands in my mouth, but I cant say the same for my kids yet.

Much greener and warmer than Newfoundland. (Although spring arrived whilst I was away). It seems a nice city, certainly a major step up from the GTA. I did the boat tour & a brief raid on the civilisation museum. Also found a brewpub (The Clocktower) but had a very disappointing pint of cask ale. Still, Montreal and Toronto provided much better experiences in that respect.

Ottawa is probably not the Mecca of beer. It's got some pleasing architecture though, as I'm sure you noticed.

Yes, it did strike me as a place I could live in, although the heat would be a problem. The apparently obsessive and competitive need to have the greenest billiard table lawn would also take some getting used to as well. Right now thoughts are for Mrs AX and I to visit next Easter (that being a convenient vacation time for a teacher.) So certainly another opportunity to meet up for that beer.
