I'm reading the Studying in Canada notes right now and it says they must apply for a study permit at the same time as you do. Says nothing about them paying fees.

You have to pay fees for kids' schooling if you are on a visitor's visa, but not sure about student visa... would like to know that myself.

you would need to apply for a study visa for them.

then they can enrol in school like normal

one tip.. when you arrive just make sure the passport expiry date is longer than the study permit finish as otherwise the permit runs out when the passport does.
it can be renewed but will be a pain so its easier to avoid

thanks for your messages.
yeah my confusion is as to whether we would have to pay international fees etc tuiton for the kids at school.

i know i have international fees to pay at college but the possibilty of having to pay international fees for schooling of kids would make a big difference as to whether we can afford it or not.

thanks
jennifer

I've just done a quick Google and there's not much out there except regurgitation of CIC's information.

I did find one school website that said no fees for kids if parent's course is a degree course (their emphasis). Fees where payable for that school were $10k a year.

But... if you are going with your OH and they get an open work permit on the back of your study permit, does that then mean kids don't pay fees as their (other) parent has a work permit (think that is the rule with work permits)?

have just read this on halifax education district
Category I

Children of parents holding Employment Authorization. No tuition is charged for these students.
Children of parents who are in the country on a Student Visa. No tuition is charged for these students

but goes on to say category II

Category II
Students who do not have Canadian citizenship and who come to live with a relative/friend in the Halifax Regional School Board must pay a tuition of $8,000 CDN.
Students who do not have Canadian citizenship and who will be living with a parent on a Visitor’s Visa are required to pay a tuition of $8,000 CDN.

so what do you take from that?

It means that if the parent is in Canada on work/study permit, children don't pay international fees. If the child is in Canada without a parent, or the parent has a visitor permit, then the child pays international fees.

Yup, looks like category I applies. Good news!

I'm hoping I won't need to go down this route, but good to know just in case.
