Here's my story so far. My uncle lives in Wetaskawin, Alberta and has done for appx 25 yrs. Visited June 2003 with my family(this was my 2nd visit, my husband and kids 1st). After hols, back in UK decided our heritage has been replaced by something unfamiliar and England is sinking due to over population with people who don't care for our traditions. Anyway, we love Canada and the people over there seem to have the same values as ourselves, so we took the plunge and decided to start the immigration process. This took me appx 6months. Sent off papers to London April 04, Received AOR end June 04. We have just been over to Alberta/BC for a 3 week research trip/holiday. Had a fantastic time, it also answered a lot of questions for us.
My husband, who is a manufacturing engineer set us 5 appointments with companies, 1 in Delta BC, 1 in Calgary and 3 in Edmonton. This was done through email and explaining that he was not looking for a job, but checking out the type of work done in these areas. He was impressed with all of the companies and the people there. All of them said that he would find no trouble in getting a job, one said if he had his papers they would set him on straight away and on returning back to the UK one has made him a job offer and asked if he could speed the immigration process up.
My daughter had suspected appendicitus on the day we were to fly home and we took her to the South Calgary Health Centre, they were very thorough and very quick in dealing with us (although it was traumatic for my daughter as she is only 5). They sent us to the Calgary Childrens Hospital as they would not advise us to fly until they had checked my daughter out. One of the medical staff dealing with us offered to take me and my daughter to the hospital whilst my husband and son got checked out of the hotel. She had just come off duty, she gave us excellent treatment at the Health Centre and she was prepared to assist in her own time.(This would never happen in the UK) I was amazed and totally grateful. My daughter was checked over at the Calgary Childrens hospital, again - no waiting. She had an ultrasound which was very thorough. The outcome was that she has inflammed lymphs near her appendix which presented itself as appendicitus and we were able to fly home. My daughter recovered very quickly. This cost appx £250.00 which I am claiming for, but if I did not have insurance, it was worth every penny.
We are now back to the waiting game and people asking us - When are you moving? Its tiresome but we are used to it now.
