.... or do mosquitos seem to really love British blood??? Or does anyone happen to have any decent tips on how to soothe the bites? as I seem to attract mosquitos like flies to a pile of s*** if you know what I mean....

I haven't been mossied yet but I have been bitten repeatedly by other flying insects.
As I sit here I have a large swelling on my arm from the latest attack down by the 'lake' in Mackenzie Towne.
I havent been able to find anything that soothes the bites BUT Deet (I know not vry enviro friendly) sure reduces the incidence.

Leather yourself in plent of Off Woods stuff and if you still get bit by the little b*****ds, Polysporin or Band Aid anti-itch gel is superb for numbing that awful, frustrating itch attack afterwards :o .....hope this helps.....BTW, Iaink has one of those top-dog Skeeter-vacs.....and they're supposed to work a treat :D

No - I think it's true! They LOVE me, and I seem to have developed an allergic reaction over the last few years. I had one bite on my forearm, and my entire lower arm from elbow to wrist swelled and was red and itchy. Just hope I don't get one on my neck! :eek:

I had rellies bring over some "Antisan" (sp?) which is good!

There is stuff here called "After-bite", which is a clear liquid in a 'pen-like' appilcator, but is messy and stinks to high heave (of Ammonia, I think). That seems to work reasonably well. :)

Edit to add: I have a problem with the Deet based repellants, because of the risk to human health. Very dangerous stuff. I certainly wouldn't put it on young kids; but now with the threat of West Nile...it's a case of rock and hard place.... :confused:

Ah yes... Antisan... I remember that stuff... My aunt introduced my family to it back over there a loooooong time ago... maybe I should ask Mum to send... :D Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I will be trying them out!!!

(I also get pretty severe reactions to the bites, some swell up to like 3 inches across, others don't react at all.. go figure.)

I'd recommend having a pack of anti-histimines too, just in case you get a particularly nasty bite. I got bitten while we were in Calgary, my leg swelled up and started to get infected :eek: The anti-h's started to do the trick after a day :)

I get eaten alive and swell up also,but the last time I was ok . I used tea tree cream and it worked great.

My last trip to UK I bought a large bottle of witch hazel...no idea why! But after we got home hubbie looked at it and tried it on black fly bite and he was so impressed with how it worked I tired it and am amazed that it too that itich out right away! And it wasn't expensive!

tea tree should warn em off as insects dont like the smell of it at all, so put some on , you can get it from chemists dunno how easy in canada but if you cant get hold of it try looking up an aromatherapist they can get it for you , its safe to use neat on the skin, but if you wanna blather it on mix a few drops in a carrier oil, as for after being bitten witch hazel is very soothing and good for any swelling , (great for bruises), and you can also try lavender oil this has to be mixed in a carrier though but it is very good for healing bites,

Marmite on toast. Apparently mossies dont like an ingredient in marmite which comes out on your skin!
