Default Joining the Police...

If my Common Law Partner visa is granted I'll be moving to Canada as a PR.

I'm very interested in applying for a career with the Halifax Police. I come from a long line of UK Police in my family and see it as a good and healthy career path.

If selected, the training course will cost me $10,000. After that the starting salary is $43, 772, rising to $72,954 after around 3 to 4 years.

Is this a good, stable salary? I've always been aware in the UK that the Police pay comfortably, so is this Canadian salary along the same lines?

Also, if anyone has any experiences with Police careers I'd be interested to hear your views. Obviously things differ from force to force...and I doubt anyone here has experience with the Halifax Regional Police directly....but if so, even better!

Thanks.

Hi James

There is a special section of this very website, dedicated just to this topic.

Here is the link.

I understand that you do not need to be a citizen to apply for most police services in Canada - except the RCMP - so being a PR will be good enough to apply.

The training fees are applicable in some police services and not others. In Calgary and Edmonton, the applicant does not pay for their own training. A friend of ours recently transferred from Calgary to Ottawa and did a three week transferree course. If he failed his final exam, he would be in for re-doing all the training at vast cost to himself!

An annual salary of $43,000 will go further in Halifax, I suspect than Calgary. An eventual salary of $75,000 is a good one.

Good luck

While I can't comment on Halifax PD, policing is a good career, not without its downsides but good overall. Good pay, benefits, rewarding career and job security.

I personally couldn't go back to front line policing, but there are certainly lots of opportunities but you do have to be prepared to get your hands dirty and its not all cops and robbers and high speed pursuits, in fact it seldom is.
