Re: I've hit the moving-to-Canada wall.
I arrived here 40 years ago today after 2 weeks at sea ... I had been out before with no intention of returning; an obligation to an Aunt who lost her husband meant I came back over. My Aunt and late Uncle had seemingly been happy here, and God bless 'em for it. However, I don't understand why it would be seen as a 'negative statement' for me to admit the truth: it has never been for me. Canada is neither the Garden of Eden nor a sh'te hole, just as England is neither eutopia nor dystopia. Should anyone wonder -or even care- why I don't go back: I've nothing and no one left, and I'm intelligent enough to know I'd not return to the world I left ... the money has changed, the measurement has changed -(and yes it did here first, but I still struggle with it)- and I've changed as well ... I don't even sound the same. I wish anyone who may choose to come to Canada only the best, but don't let's pretend it isn't without risk or that it isn't for all of us. I made my bed ... I lie on it. (I stumbled on to this thread with no intention of posting in re the anniversary of my arrival, this is quite random ... I find it curious that honest -and I might add 'valid'- points of view would be classified as negative or positive). In an unbiased way, I should like to wish the same good fortune to anyone who may choose to return and has the opportunity.

Re: I've hit the moving-to-Canada wall.
My girlfriend and I have just been given the possibility of going to Nova Scotia for a year to stay with my girlfriend's uncle. My girlfriend's mum is Canadian and she's been before and really wants to go. I want to go but I'm a bit scared, i need a job before i go and there seems so much to do. She's ok cos she's a Canadian citizen by birth. I have to leave a reasonable job over here and i don't want to let her down and not be able to find anything over there. Arrrggghhh

Either go..... or don't. Only you can decide. I certainly would not leave the decision up to a load of pixels on a message board.

Re: I've hit the moving-to-Canada wall.
True but it's nice to read other peoples experiences and get the general gist. Talking about things usually helps, i've found, and talking to people who you don't know tends to help me more. :)

Re: I've hit the moving-to-Canada wall.
Tangram is right ... you have to make the call thats right for you. I am going over as the OH has been offered job ... I gave up a reasonable job - well I liked it - for a life overseas in a country I have no connection with! It is somewhat scary! Having said that, Canada has always had a lure for me ... if I am honest, west coast more than where we are headed which is Toronto, but we decided and I decided that for me, its an opportunity to good to miss! You never know, it may not work out, but I won't know until I have tried it... but you do have to make the call on your own, what is right for one is so wrong for another...

Don't do it. It all seems like a great adventure at first but these types arrangements always end in tears when the novelty wears off and you find yourself stuck with a crap job in a crap place. |

Re: I've hit the moving-to-Canada wall.
In my experience, taking risks is part of life. Devilman, I think you should go. You sound young, get out and experience another part of the world, if it doesn't work out, you can always come back. Do what feels right but don't listen to those who say "Don't do it", they don't know you, or your circumstances, and I agree with you that it is great to get lots of opinions from people on these boards. I moved away with my boyfriend when I was quite young to another country and it was the best thing I ever did.......I have no regrets. Go for it!!!!

Best thing to do is start a thread in the Immigration forum and people there will be able to help you figure out your options. :) |

And a visa. ;) I've posted on your Welcome Inn thread, but unfortunately you cannot just move to Canada and work for a year as you seem to think you can, you do need a visa to allow you to do this.
Thanks for your help :) |

Yeah, i know i need a visa but i need a job offer before i can apply for a visa.
Thanks for your help :) Alternatively, if you are by any chance under 30, you could look at the Working Holiday Visa which would give you a year's open work permit? |

Oh what a little ray of sunshine you are. I do love a PMA.
You seemed like you wanted someone to help make a decision. Although from the latter post it sounds like you've made it. Good luck with your choice. Bring a coat. I do wish people would indicate when they are asking people for help making a decision whether they should go or not that they only want affirming responses. Would save a lot of time. |
