I don't have personal experience of any hospital in the Greater Vancouver Area. However, I thought that, if I knew the general location of the hospital, I'd be able to share some thoughts about neigbhourhoods that were within feasible commuting range. But a Google search did not bring up any results for Vancouver District Hospital. I'm wondering if you meant Vancouver General Hospital.

If you did mean Vancouver General Hospital, I think North Vancouver might be a good place to live. North Vancouver has all the suburban amenities (shops, schools, etc.), but is close to wonderful wilderness parks.

I suggest you also read these threads in which christmasoompa asked about suburbs within commutable distance of Vancouver that had a "village" feel to them:
Two questions about towns in commutable distance of Vancouver??

Finally decided, we're moving to........ - Good response by JonboyE in post #7.

Where would you recommend we live? (Vancouver) - I suggest you pay particular attention to Rob_999's excellent response in post #25.
You REALLY need to visit Vancouver before you can say where you'll want to live. I believe this is true of any city, but it's even more true of Vancouver.

The city is in a beautiful setting, but there are compromises to be made. The closer you are to charming features (mountains, water, etc.), the more you have to pay.

Even within the same dollar bracket, you have to choose between proximity to mountains and wilderness areas that come at the price of high rainfall (e.g., North Vancouver) and areas that have less rain, but are flat (and in my opinion boring), to the south of the city.

The BE website has two Wiki articles that may be of interest, Vancouver and North Vancouver.

You also may find it useful to read the articles in the Moving Logistics-Canada and British Columbia Lifestyle sections of the BE Wiki.

You also might try the Brits 2 Vancouver and Van-Immi forums.

Currently in Cardiff, south wales so any taffies in bc?
The Happy St David's Day thread revealed that Welshman (not surprisingly, LOL) and Eastbound were Welsh residents of BC (albeit in the Okanagan Valley and Vancouver Island respectively).

Hope that helps.

Further to your desire to live in or near the country and outdoors, I thought I should explain something about Canada.

The fact that you live in the country does not, in and of itself, mean that you have a lot of space in which to go for walks and hikes. Canada does not have the system of rights-of-way that the UK has. So living near farms doesn't really help if you want to go for long walks, etc.

But, with that having been said, the Greater Vancouver Area does have some wonderful public parks, including wilderness parks. In my opinion, proximity to parks is more important than proximity to farmland, for the reasons I've stated.

If you choose carefully, you can find a house that is close to the amenities that a city offers and that ALSO is close wilderness parks.

Thanks for all your help. I did mean Vancouver General Hospital, got a bit excited! I appreciate your comments about country, just meant didn't want to live in the city, looking for more of a villagy feel.
Am planning a visit soon so it's nice to have some areas to aim for.
