Smile Its Now or Never

I am 47 and my husband is 45 (toyboy) anyway we are really restless in England, kids are no longer reliant on us well except when they have big bills, and we would love to move to Canada, either Saskatoon or Calgary, my husband is a time served self employed Joiner, specialising mainly in luxury kitchens and bedrooms, although he has done lots of shop fitting. I am just an accounts manager with no qualifications other than GCSE's and office skills, payroll etc., we have not started any visa applications, several questions - will our age be a problem? would we be able to perhaps come on a temporary visa for a year by which time we would know how things were going. we may only have around 20K to bring with us until we sold our house, so we would definately be renting, what are the prospect of getting jobs, my husband earns really good money here but I am afraid that's not everything, is it? we are both hard working and not afraid to take risks. Please tell me if you think I am mad. Only problem I can see is my driving skills on the wrong side of the road!!!

Hi Wizfox - welcome to the forum. On the subject of age - don't let that stop you - I'm 50 this year and hubby is 45 (another toyboy ) and we have just taken our meds. Hope to begin our new adventure and life in Calgary sometime May/June this year!

Don't know how much you have researched but there is an Emigrate Show coming up in Sandown on 17/18/19 March - as good a place to start as any.

Best of luck!

If you do it .............you can say you did it

If you don't, you'll never know what life could have been like.

If it seems like the right time in your lives, why not !!!!

Everyone has doubts and worries...............but life is too short. You never know what is around the next corner.

Good luck xx

I have also been reading through some of the other questions and another thing which may be a problem is our qualifications, my husband did his apprentiship in 1976 he has no longer got any documentation as we have never needed it in this country, he has been self employed since 1980, and the same with me I have worked since leaving college in 1975 and never once shown any certificate or O'level results, will this be a problem. Another thing in my youth I was a bit of a naughty girl once slapped someone will this be a problem with police check.

You got that right. We're a bit younger but decided to take the risk and move to Australia 2 years ago. Took us 18 months to get here but so far I'm so glad we didn't let the jitters and the doubters get the better of us

Hi,

Saskatoon i would avoid. IF your husband is a skilled tradesmen there is bucket loads of work in calgary. this city is constantly growing as people are attracted by the oil industry. Looking out of my office in downtown right now i can see 4 cranes busy at work errecting new buildings. With those new buildings comes and increase in employment opportunities, and with that comes more people in need of homes, which means lots of home construction.

I will be honest i cant help you on the details of immigration, cause i came as a dependent of my parents. But, i can tell you that calgary is a nice, clean, well mannered city, with alot of work. Not to mention we have the most pituresque mountains a short hours drive away! Cant go wrong with that!

Cheers,
Paul

You say your husband earns good money...... that is because there is a lack of trades people in England. If you remember it went out of fashion to do an apprentiships. So now your husband has plenty of work. (my brother is a joiner aged 49). So Calgary is exactly the same, if you want to get is asap, it may be worth getting a work visa (quicker to get) then apply for PR and at least be living here whilst waiting for the PR. Your husband won't have a problem getting a job in Calgary

you dont need viagra or geritol til you are old! 45 and 50 are not old, its the prime of life and best time to start afresh
