Default ITA BC study material

Hi all,

I had an email this morning from ITA BC informing me that my challenge application for Automotive Service Technician was approved (yay) and I recently (about 10 days ago) submitted my application for BC PNP so hoping that will be processed fairly quickly here, I was wandering if anyone has any information or knows where I can find good study books/material for my ITA exam? I want to study up and refresh myself on stuff before I sit the challenge exam in October!

Any help as always is greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Tom

Hi Siouxie!
Thanks so much for the links, I will be sure to use all of them! 😃 hopefully I can pass the test first time!

Quick question, I’m not sure if you know much on this but I’ve heard that if the conservatives were to win the election here in October then Express Entry and BC PNP could be gone? Is this correct? I’m worried about it as I’ve submitted my EEBC PNP application and this could be removed if a conservative government were to happen?

Thanks again Siouxie,

Tom

Similar boat to you - wrong side of the pond still currently mind - I challenged and sat my AST exam in June and passed - what is your knowledge as it stands - the exam for me went better than i thought it would, despite having some semi awkward questions, had never sat it before, have never worked on american vehicles, background in uk van, light truck and plant - got 86%.

So... study materials i got stuck with hugely being based in the UK - I believe if your in BC you can order the individual course modules to be printed and sent to an address in BC. I bought a book after getting some advise online called "Todays technician - automotive service and systems" I bought it online, it helped me hugely -id say there were 20 or so questions I passed due to revising using the book, but in fairness they didn't teach me anything that wasn't available online free of charge. it was more memory jogging than anything else.

Things I'd suggest you get under your hat (in no particular order) that could catch you out even as a seasoned tech

- how to read micrometers and vernier callipers
- Ohms Law
- how various sensors work speed, temperature, MAF, pressure, throttle etc and learn the reference voltages too etc (i.e rough numbers for sensors as quoted online, understand negative temperature coefficient's etc).
-Basic automatic gearbox design - what happens when you hold the planet carrier etc.
- vacuum gauge readings
- diagnostic codes - P,B,C,U codes and what each letter means (don't worry about the numbers) and in what order you should deal with them.
- I had several wiring diagram based questions - so if that ain't your bag it may be worth spending some time on it
- likewise i had a couple of alignment questions where they give different readings and ask what you should do to correct it.
- Camber, castor, toe and which bit is negative and positive (i had a mind blank in my exam and knew which was which but couldn't remember negative or positive camber and lost a mark as i had 2 questions on it, so hedged my bets)
- hybrid vehicles make up 5 or so questions, and i assumed wrongly (i've had hybrid training in the UK) these would be super simple, but actually where questions around system design and how you carry out repairs.

when i looked at my exam and my result i don't think it was too hard, but you could get caught out by forgetting the simple stuff you learnt in college but doesn't come into day to day stuff.

Any other questions ask away

Not sure what the forum rules are as i know you can't pm members asking questions for immigration - but I have a bunch of practice exams not that i sourced (they are paid for, a friend of a friend of a friend had bought them previously and shared them with me), if there was someway to share these with you without breaking forum rules i would be more than happy to let you have copies.

Hey man, thanks for reaching out! So I have my ITA BC exam (Red Seal) booked for October 8th, hoping to get as much study time in as possible! A co-worker of mine has managed to borrow a book from one of his friends for me to use called 'Automotive Technologies' which covers level 1-4, I haven't started to read it yet but looks pretty thorough! I did 3 years at College in the UK (city and guilds), then 4 years independent VW/Audi specialist, then 3 years VW main dealer (UK), and so far 1.5 years at VW main dealer (Kamloops, BC) so all in all 11.5 years! I have done the red seal practise questions on their website a few times to get used to terminology etc and got 18/20 then 20/20, fairly easy questions though! I checked out all the links Siouxie gave me above and found some good material there too, so I will check in on those again over the next few weeks!

Hybrid vehicles I don't have much experience with (VW require completion of a High Voltage Technician course before you can work on them), Ohms law I will be definitely looking at, Auto transmissions again I will be looking into and the usual stuff which I don't deal with every day!

I would definitely be interested in some copies of the practise exams, that would be super helpful! I'm not sure on forum rules regarding sharing of study material, someone on here might know??
