My Mom lives in Kent. Her old TV just died and my brother in law spoke to a man who owns a TV shop and she just bought a new 14" refurbished TV from him. I asked her what she paid for it - £110. Now, maybe its a Sony Wega - although I rather doubt it. In Canadian dollars that means she paid the equivalent of $238 for her TV!

I just bought a 14" TV for my granddaughter. It cost me $99 at Futureshop. Its not a fancy model but the cost is equivalent to £45.

So my Mom paid $139 more for her refurbished TV in Maidstone - than I did for a brand new TV in Regina.

Is that typical?

Seriously, the only thing I've been astounded by is the expense of a new bed Golly, they may be good, but they are "arm and leg" territory!

You can get 14" for much cheaper than that at places like tesco.co.uk

Yes, I wondered about the price. Of course, I didn't say anything to my Mom because she was all pleased with her new TV. I could hardly tell her that I thought she had paid too much for it!!

Actually - I just checked on the Tesco site and the cheapest 14 inch TV was £89, which is still loads more than you would pay for one in Canada.

There is actually one there for 69 GBP on the Tesco site. Its a Goodmans with Teletext. It sounds like your mum definitely got diddled but it could be thats its a far better make...

I don't know what Teletext is so I just looked up the ones without!

Oh - I know what that is - its that thing on the TV where you can look up flight arrivals and get holidays etc. etc. I wonder why its so popular there and nobody has ever heard of it here?

I still think its more expensive than here. I bet you could get a fairly decent 19" TV at Walmart or Zellers for $100.

Believe it or not Switzerland is cheaper than the UK for electrical goods and the Europeans are ordering stuff from the US and paying the extra shipping costs to avoid paying European prices! My biggest surprise from living in Switzerland was how cheap the wine was - in fact you could get imported wine far cheaper than Swiss made wine which is just as well, 'cos Swiss wine is awful

We used to buy boxes of 6 bottles of Spanish/Portuguese wine from a place called Jumbo and it came to about 1.20 a bottle - cheaper than water - hick! But when you come down to it the Brits certainly do get ripped off big time. I just came back from spending a year with my mum in Cambridge and I couldn't believe that it would cost 3.30 a day just to go 5 miles into the city centre on the bus. In Winnipeg - the last time I checked it was $1.60 to anywhere in the city unless I'm looking at old figures. Mind you, the one thing I did notice was CDs in Tesco's now matches what we pay in the US - about time an' all
