Especially in BC, even with a 40% discount for claims free, we pay just about double the price for what the same car, drivers and coverage would cost in Alberta.

However like most monopolies, ICBC has no competition and is a royal rip off.

Depends on your risk tolerance. Rental cars come with $200k liability coverage. An emergency and overnight in ICU can cost that. Rental car insurance is the absolute minimum, so they can sell you more.

Many residents of the province get rental coverage through their car policy, so don't need extra coverage.

All insurance is expensive when you don't need it.
