Default Insurance for first 3 months

Hi All

I have been trying to source medical insurance for our family of four to cover the initial 3 months before our Canadian insurance kicks in. I have tried getting annual global insurance for us all but it seems to be limited to 31 days as the maximum length of any one trip. As we will be in Canada for all of the initial 3 months, has anyone come across this situation and what did you do? Would I be better off just getting a quote for the 3 months of cover needed and just not mention that we aren't actually returning to the UK?

I thought this would be the simple bit. This immigration lark is not for the feint hearted!!

You can't use standard travel insurance , for one thing if you get seriously Ill , they may well try and repatriate you to the UK !

I must admit I hadn't thought about repatriation; that would be ironic! What did everybody else do? CanadaSure are the only ones I have been able to get a price from and it seems they are a UK company and so seem to be rather expensive to me compared with "standard" travel insurance. Has anyone used a firm actually in Canada?

I found this company that does emigration insurance (was looking for my son a few months ago) which may be of use.

http://www.duinsure.com/sites/duinsu...ies_Emigration

This product, which is underwritten by Europ-Assistance, offers clients cover on their travels to their final country of destination / Emigration (for a period of 5 days to 6 months), but what is new and exciting is that we can offer cover INSIDE their new country of Emigration for a period of One, Two or Three Months.

5 days (pre emigration) costs £16, 3 months additional cover (post-emigration) in Canada costs £107 - a total of £123.

For the policy details (which is in 2 parts, one pre-emigration and one post-emigration): http://www.duinsure.com/sites/duinsu...le/EM_2010.pdf

These people, http://pucherinsurance.com/ offer coverage as follows:

"Expatriate medical insurance is designed for persons who are not covered under a government health insurance plan or are waiting for coverage in the country in which they intend to live."

which seems to cover it.

I've had good service from Mr. Pucher, for visitors who were difficult to insure elsewhere.

The wiki gives a list of companies offering this insurance. You can get an online quote from Pacific Blue Cross. http://www.pbchbs.com/Corp/travel/travel-vtc.aspx

I went with Canadasure http://www.canadasure.com/contact-us.aspx and it was around 150 quid. I deeply regret that now, what a waste of money! I wish I hadnt bothered. I guess I always feel that way about paying insurance though.
